Need help creating an industrial feel that's still cozy

Hello Houzz Community!

I'm trying to do up my living room with a somewhat industrial feel. But I still want it to be cozy. ("Cozy Industrial Chic!")

So far, the pieces you see are all I have. Here are my design dilemmas:
- I want to paint the wall facing the couch in a dark color. Initially I wanted to go with a dark, purplish grey but now I'm not sure it will go with the floor. Also, Singapore is extremely hot and humid - do you think a dark color there will make the place feel even hotter?
- What other furniture pieces should I add on the wall facing the sofa? I'm not strongly in favor of a TV console - I was thinking a couple of arm chairs and perhaps a bookcase.
-I bought the red, Chinese cabinet because I LOVE it. I'd like to incorporate it into this room but don't have to. If I keep it where it is, I could put a large plant on the right of it to separate from the seating area. If not, what else would I do with this space?
- The dining table is a bit larger than I expected but now that it's here, how do I work with it? It's pretty high. I was thinking of getting a bench made for one side and chairs for the other side.....the chair you see in the living room doesn't go with it because of the legs I think. And it's too short. Ideas for benches and chairs and their colors?
-I think I should change the legs on the sofa - what do you think will look good?
-Don't love the lighting over the dining table but it's the landlords.

Your design style is eclectic! If you LOVE the new red cabinet, keep it. What will warm the space is an area rug And yes, change up the sofa legs to a more contemporary style. Industrial chairs with the dining table will speak to the industrial coffee table in the LR. I'd nix the bench idea for four chairs at the table. To go all out eclectic, a contemporary art piece above the red chest would be by choice.

Great advice. You need a rug to anchor and warm up the space. Use red family of color as your accent color and in your rug.

Are you saying that cooking next to the chute would gross you out even if its covered? Andd to use it for its intended purpose? In the first picture, it looks like the stove is directly underneath the chute, but I can see in other pics that it is not. I think it is far enough away. If everything is bagged properly, it shouldn't be that bad. You will have to check on local code regarding having the stove next to the window. Code may make your decision for you. People usually just put shorter cabinets above that type of range hood. I would recommend doing so because you need all the storage you can get. The hood--being different from the bank of cabinets--will provide relief to the eye. With cabinets above, it'll still feel balanced. And, as for covering the chute, do you want to cover it and restrict access or do you still need to use it for its intended purpose and just want to camouflage it? To help the room feel pleasant, cheery, and light, I recommend using a glass tile. Even though it's applied to a wall, the translucency still shows and evokes a sense of the adjectives above. I think it would help keep things light. Consider a slightly higher toe-kick underneath the lower cabinets. It helps to create a lighter-footed feeling. You could also consider cabinets that have furniture style feet. for a more open feeling. Your kitchen seems like an ideal room to use modern, lacquered cabinets. I don't know if you like the super-modern look, but I think it could be nice. Maybe just for the uppers. Use a medium-to-light toned wood on the bottom. A limestone floor might be nice. Or you can do wood or laminate. You could go with dark or light. I think it's mostly about preference.

Hi yoyo188, that's a very detailed plan! Looks fine with me, except I have a concern regarding the dining area. (The following done with Houzz Sketch function!) Just wondering if some of the guests at the dining table might potentially be facing the shoe rack? Hello, In 3 years time, you need to put back the wall since u have a 9 yrs old Son hitting teenager and expect own space or your girl would prefer her private space as girl and part of build self-respected lady. Beginning putting them together helps build bond and family strength. Best to start building independence early, makes your parenting easier. Build a home rather than a house. A space is meant to build relationship. With your family size, I would not suggest breaking wall. Extend living room, best is extending into balcony by creating same levels as living room. Now got zip blinds which seal aircon space within balcony open to living. Having glass showcase is good for your toys display. See idea from Ikea. For your new home starting, get basic done prosper. Basic means the essentials. For other parts, take your time and enjoy finding more ideas and shopping around till the great feeling comes to u. If not sure, I think Ikea has many combinations so if u do not like after few years, easy to do make-over. Expensive furniture is too painful to change. Ha! More space for bedroom? use the folding type beds and double as study table. I use platform bed like Japanese room. For Long dining tables, there are extendable type when guests comes. Ikea comes cheapest. There are premium in other Malls. Get extra chair that is stackable not foldable, hurt kids fingers and takes space. Have fun!

I would get rid of that pendant. Here's one link to industrial pendant lights http://www.houzz.com/industrial-pendants Pick a light that you like and show it to your landlord. I bet she/he will say yes to your suggestion since pendant lights can easily be changed. In fact, if there's already a really secure junction box there already i bet they may even go with a ceiling fan light combo if that's what you really want
