LOST - color and look match

Dear All,

This is an apt that I'm going to move in for 6-8 months and rent out eventually after the house reno is completed. Due to budget again, I'm leaving the living /dining floor untouched in original old fashion looking sandy/red/granite (which I really dislike).

I'm at a lost how to match the chinese rosewood furniture will this flooring color and how to make it look more modern classic, brighter & vibrant. I'm also unsure what style of ceiling lights will match.

The lving is linked to dining in a rectangular shape. All walls will be in white.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If the walls will remain white and the floor is also off white, I suggest using area rugs to add comfort underfoot and color to your decor. I like this soft blue Oriental rug with your dark rosewood furnishings. The mod light fixtures don't suit the formality of the rooms, so consider replacing them with more elegant chandeliers hung much lower than the present height. The outdated valance also needs to go. You have a lot of potential in this space.

I would reupholster the rosewood furniture in natural canvas or a natural linen look . Ask the upholsterer to do the job with NO welting. That will make it look more contemporary.

Then stop by West Elm, Pottery Barn, or Crate & Barrel for some brightly colored pillows. I'm thinking coral might work well with your tile, but you be the judge of what color works best with it. For now we'll assume it's coral. So I'd like to see one wall painted coral if you're so inclined. Otherwise, I'd leave the walls white.

Next, let's cover some of that tile you don't like. Two choice:
1. A rug you'll take with you. Perhaps a shaggy offwhite one.
2. A rug you'll leave in your rental. This could be a large piece of carpeting, cut and bound like a rug. Measure for size before going to the carpet store. Most carpeting is 12' wide, so figure on making a rug 12 x something so that there is no waste, or you could make a couple of 6 x somethings.

If you could change out the rosewood coffee table for another, I think you'd be happier with the furniture. It needs some variety. Even a couple of small tables from IKEA could work for 6 to 8 months.

I also have an overwhelming need to see something curvy, flirtatious and round in the space. Consider this when scouting for decor and accesory items (i.e. round rug, curvy fluid light fixtures). Also, would it be a complete abomination to sand down the furniture (so it looks older) or painting it a new color before upholstering to modernize it? I agree with j222b's suggestion in that the furniture and space could benefit from some eclectic coverings but perhaps a neutral fabric against a new color that could bring out the carving of the wood could work too? In my head I see a rusty orange or deep aubergine purple or rich dark green. Just a thought...

The key thing to think about is making sure the 2 sofas are different enough that it doesn't look like you tried to match them and failed. You want to make sure the shape of the arms is in the same style - rounded or square? do they go to the front edge of the seats or not? Also is the back a tight back or loose cushions? Make sure the new sofa has the same visual weight as the old one. If it's a heavy looking sofa, get another heavy looking sofa. Since the leather one is black, I'd go with a grey colour. It will look good with what you have and be easy to clean. Make sure the fabric is 100% polyester. That is more durable than fabrics with cotton in them.

Hi Rubypumps. Unfortunately you have made the common mistake of mixing undertones. I see this a lot as a colour consultant. Mistakes with your hard finishes are the worst kind because they are very costly to change. Right now your walls have a pink undertone and your walls behind the tub and counter are clearly blue grey. Since blue is complementary to pink, it brings out the pink in the tile even more and the clean blue makes the tile look dirty. It may be hard for you to see this, but this is what's happening and this is probably why you don't like your bathroom. Since you chose such a busy mosaic, it has become the boss (and focal point) of the room and I would now keep your other finishes as simple as possible. If you can, down the road, change the beige tile. Because unfortunately, there is no magic colour combination that will make it disappear. Working with what you have, I would most likely go with a more neutral cabinet like Uniboard G21 Viva Walnut. It will help warm up the space. Black is too stark for this bathroom.

Hi. It's looking really good and you've done well with the bookshelves! ! I love the new sofa! I would say just a tad more yellow if your husband can bear it, doesn't have to be solid yellow. I'd add something else on the left shelves (I'd move one shelf of photos to the right hand shelving and swap for some books), maybe a ginger jar if you can get an old one. Maybe a patterned throw or cushion for your wooden chair and a small yellow throw for the bench just draped over the corner. Table idea sounds great. Are you happy with it? I think it's made such a big difference

I like both your suggestions. Thank you so much and thanks for the pics to give me better idea of your suggestions.

Any more comments on my thought color and my thought to make thicker cushions to cover the seat and back of the rosewood furniture (alike the mid-century look) will be most appreciated.
