Design Dilemma Furniture Living Room

Coffee table advice?

My living area is very tiny with not much space for a coffee table- but like to have one there to sit my coffee on etc. I was thinnking a glass coffee table would not make the room look smaller and give the illusion on more space. Do you have any ideas of small living rooms? I like this table below:

A table that has skinny legs creates the illusion of space. Maybe if there is the opportunity to move the furniture away from the wall (as this, again, creates space), this could be something worth looking into.

I think if you want to show off the nice wood grain and inlay of the table, go light color on the sofa, even cream like the drapes, or neutral like the carpet, or a shade darker. Then you can add whatever accents you like in pillow colors, accessories which can easily change seasonally or with time and little cost. The sofa(s) are so big that you might not want them making the most design statement in the room, but just providing comfy seating and a big amount of soothing neutral color. It helps to look at your room like its a landscape painting, foreground, midground, background. Sofas would be midground and you don't want them too bright or busy to overpower the other planes in the roomscape. The colors you have now work, but I would go solid with a textured fabric, something soft like a chenille.

Hi Dagobert Duck (interesting name), I am assuming that this is a townhouse in Asia, as you mention the dry kitchen and wet kitchen (terms used mostly in Singapore) and also from the visible lift on the plan that you shared. I would definitly advice you to keep the dry kitchen and place the dining table close to the dry kitchen or close to the bay window on the left. The space here is rather large and can easily accommodate a regular 2 metre table with 8 chairs. If you are concerned about the view of dining table as you enter the house, you could always place a round table near the entrance to block off the view. I agree with Elaine about placing the furniture away from walls. Place a bunch of fresh flowers or art/sculpture above the round table like in a hotel entrance. So the the first view you see when you enter the house is the table with flowers. Its difficult to give you any further advice as we have no idea what your final vision of the place is? Hi Janet, ok I originally sketched on my tab (red) as 1 BR then modified on my phone (blue) for 2Br. hope you’ll get the idea. Master’s with walk-in closet, connected bath with added door (for sharing). kept store at end, open kitchen, Living rm ok to fit a sofa with tv/media cabinet. For dining, I’m seeing to combine your work and dining table. get another similar table to combine with your 1.7 table. (or if budget allows get a long table 1 piece.) dining side you put benches and work side get a high chair. this setting becomes the main feature of your house( my idea only not a rule) the bookshelves be on 1 side and can be longer as needed. hope this brings you more ideas for your new home. cheers! arielc

I started with a design dilemma, and got some good advice from some very kind people on Houzz. The transformation took more time to figure out then it did to complete the construction. My advice to anyone wanting a new space is to do your research, without rushing into decisions, which can be difficult when working with some, because of the 'sale deadline'! Guess what? There will always be another sale! In fact, by taking my time I ended up being able to keep all of the organization options I wanted and ended up with such a great sale that I was able to upgrade to custom solid wood cabinets and drawers for the same price as my original stock cabinets with MDF panels. By customizing the sizes of cabinets, I was able to create more space to open up the small kitchen for a spacious feel. My contractor helped me achieve the built in pantry wall which puts all of my spices, canned goods, etc., right in front of me to see exactly what I have or need to replenish. But, my favorite part of this kitchen is what the contractor did with my narrow and deep closet. It was widened and turned into a dry bar with microwave and roll out storage. Having a place for my coffee maker and microwave was key, so I could keep the new expanse of counter space visible! Removing the 'bump up' wall of my original counter offered a more open concept feel, which was a great improvement.
