Need help with flooring

Current flooring: white-ish ceramic tile measuring about 6x15 cm.
Budget: Near $0.
Idea: Fill depressed grout lines with sealant of some sort and paint.

Does anyone know if this is doable? We live in the very hot and humid tropics. Not keen on rugs as it is too dusty and high maintenance. If this doesn't work can anyone suggest something else?

First of all, what is the problem you are trying to solve? What is wrong with the tile?

Tile is dated, scratched badly in some places and basically looks yucky. Just wanted to refresh it a bit. Ideally we would like to hack these tiles and replace them with wooden flooring but that's way beyond our budget.

You can check out the outdoor floor tiles like the Scala (Google Snap and Go tile) which are easy to piece additionally on the ground for a new look. ;) I saw another brand here, http://list.qoo10.sg/item/OUTDOOR-TIMBER-FLOOR-TILE-SINGAPORE-SELLER-100-AUTHENTIC-BEAUTIFUL/482453309 (not sure where this brand is from but they all work the same). They even have faux grass, stones as well as timber. Definitely easy to DIY, and you can combine different surfaces together if you want (stones and wood combo for example).

Hi Alice, that's a really good question - challenging dilemma with a strong limitation (no hacking!) but I believe workable. Would you consider making changes to the backsplash? Adding some strip lighting will help too. Given the pink checkered floor tiles cannot be changed, I'd favour going for very neutral and clean looking cabinetry - to reduce visual clutter and bring in some harmony. Regardless of colour of finish choice, I prefer cabinetry that's not see-through. How about natural wood finishes: All-white with wood countertops might work as well: I leave it to the professionals to give their advice!

If the tile scratched in this location, any paint that you attempted to apply would scratch worse, as well as chip and peel. Ceramic tile is rarely or never painted and I have never heard it attempted on a floor. I wouldn't try it myself for fear of making the situation worse.

What about washable, inexpensive cotton rag rugs? They can look very nice and you just throw them in the wash with towels or jeans depending on the color you select.

Another inexpensive option would be floating a laminate floor, such as wood look planks.

It's possible to fill the depressed grout with additional grout, but the new color may not much what is currently there.

If the only problem is the grout, then it can be ground out or touched up with paint.
