Do you like this as an inside fan?

I have spotted this at my local cafe and i think I like it for my living room. What do you think of the style/design?

No way!! Wood = outdoors for most people and depending on the room, it'll look too weird in there I reckon.

David - Thanks! Appreciate that you even drew out the plan. :) You are absolutely right, it's been difficult finding an optimum layout. In fact, our current layout is more or less the same as your plan. Would you have chosen different furniture - a smaller sofa or a different dining table perhaps? (Also, I'm curious: is there a good reason why the architect had the pillar like that?) Mona - Do you mean having a buffet at the entry? I currently do have a sideboard, though it wouldn't fit at the entry - it's about 67" wide by 18" deep. It's currently placed in the middle of the long wall. There's actually still sufficient clearance between it and the 3-seater sofa in David's plan. plague - The household shelter is a local (Singapore) building requirement. Its walls are reinforced and is meant to be a shelter in times of emergency. It can't be removed, and any renovations carried out cannot affect its integrity (there is a list of permitted and prohibited works). Normally it is just used as a pantry or storeroom.

Standard residential door heights are 6'-8" and 8'-0". My rule of thumb is to use the 8'-0" doors when you have tall ceilings or to use transoms with 6'-8" doors. Also consider the width. I try to use 3'-0" wide door where possible. Narrow doors look even narrower when they are tall.

I take it this isn't your bathroom. The glass could be handmade lead light which means bespoke by someone who makes lead light windows or it could be a transfer applied to a plain glass window. Check on ebay or online sticker/transfer stores for similar. I've never seen a piece like that in Australia so I'm thinking this might be an American antique. It's not normal to put an expensive antique piece in a bathroom and if you did it would be best in a bathroom that only has minimal use. And you would want to have a lot of good exhaust extraction to get rid of moisture. If you picked up one of those repro Indonesian mahogany pieces you would be spending a lot less money and might regard the piece as expendable. You can buy wood hardening sprays that resist moisture from the hardware store and spray the carcass (all the unstained pieces inside) with this stuff to resist moisture. You'd still need a good exhaust system however and keep the room well aired.

Hi Luke. My Dad would ve rolling in his grave at the thought, lol. We are big leaf tea drinkers inmour family and the rule always was (and is): only rinse out with water. The tanins which stain as re your pot's seasoning and should never be removed. Not sure how OH&S friendly that is, but I can never clean inside the pot for that reason. Having a cuppa as I type...
