Island or no island?

Both options have their pros and cons! A kitchen island gives you another working space, a place for dining and even storage - though no island is a bit more open and saves space if it is at a premium (which is usually is in HDB's!).

Not having an island in your kitchen is against the norm these days, and I personally love islands as they're a good sitting space as well as workable when you're cooking up a storm.

Islands are usually designed at counter height so that the cook can also use the island as a part of the prep area of the kitchen. However, you can design your island low if you want. A nice table might be another option............

Size of Hob on 7ft++ Island

Thanks Patricia! Sink has to be on island - my only prep space! Larger sink is with single gas hob some 20 steps away outside the main kitchen. (We live in a small condominium) I attached a photo of the 23" hob. Would this be workable? I was advised to go for a larger hob and use the hob itself also as prep space, as it won't heat up. What's your opinion about that? Thanks again for your comments!

Hi Charlie, Hope these two suggestions work. The first one is similar to your initial idea, I just changed the orientation of your sofa and TV console. I suggest a modular sofa where you could make it L-shaped or two separate love seats whenever you like. Where you put your island looks like a good place; least amount of reno/hacking! PS I used Sketch's sticker functions to put in the furniture.

Hi 4eva zx, It's not optimum if you don't want to build a bespoke TV wall/console where I've placed the TV here (suggest that you get something where you can swivel the TV towards the sofa, or slightly extend that wall so the TV can be directly in front of the sofa), but in terms of spatial efficiency, your round table would be better placed like so: This is so that it's near the kitchen and you can use it for meals for more than two people. This placement will also allow you to make this family heirloom a visual focal point and conversation piece for your home. If you ever need to use a bigger table for gatherings with more people, you can simply put a rectangular top onto the round table and seat 6-8 people – the placement provides for space that allows this. Find a good ID or decorator who will work towards incorporating this family heirloom in your new home, and you'll be able to enjoy it for years to come. Hope this helps!
