Cable rail design.

Contractor has added a piece of pressure treated wood to cedar wrapped columns to attach the cable rail system. This does not look good in my opinion. The extra piece of wood spoils the look of the cedar columns and will never stain the same as the cedar.
Advice for alternate design wanted and welcomed.

Comments (2)Hello Cody, If the TV isn't going on the mantle wall than the only other available wall is the 13'5" wall. You might think about moving the TV to this wall and balancing it with art or plants. Your sofa can be turned with its back to the entrance/stairs and a small console table can be placed behind it to act as a visual stop. Your chair can be placed where the sofa currently sits or you could add a pair of new chairs to this area near the stair alcove which would create a smaller seating cluster there. Small benches could be placed in front of the fire for additional seating, when and if necessary. This one is a challenge, but if you don't mind the TV as focal point and the sofa perpendicular to the fireplace, this could work. Comments (3)Work with a landscape designer/architect. Likely, some sort of retained, back filled walls will be necessary to create an area large enough to place a table with chairs & umbrella. If you entertain multiple generations, keep your patio to a single level. I would suggest integrating planting areas within the patio area, to introduce color & eventually partial shade. Designing a pergola into this composition would be a nice addition to. Get the blessings of any governing/HOA body that you need approvals from, which your design professional of choice should be able to facilitate for you. Comments (5)My walk-in is slightly longer (1.60x3.60m) - I only have the design with measurements on paper, but I could look for it this evening, scan it and post it for you if you want. In the meanwhile, have a look at the photos of the finished room. We took advantage of the height and got pull down rails; also, a big shelf above the door and narrow shelves on the side. Comments (3)Hi Emmarene; thanks for your suggestion. I am with you that I feel water proof lights is the only way to go here really. Also, you are quite right: recessed lights are not an option (the existing cavities are not deep enough, and contractors are rightfully apprehensive about drilling deeper as they fear they may affect the wasterproofing). The lights you are suggesting - flat square/rectangular - is exactly what I have been looking for, but to no avail. Are these specimen that you came across waterproof? 6 years agoShould add that there are metal support columns from ground to roof that have been engineered to support new porch. These metal poles are wrapped in cedar as pictured in earlier photo. I had thought that cable rail system would penetrate the metal poles for secure support.
