Remodel the exterior of this house to a more tropical look

Hi guys. I intend to remodel the exterior of my house to give it a more tropical look with neutral colors. It currently looks too "modern" with the white and gray colors. How should I transform the exterior without blowing a huge budget?

It is a very modern house, and a nice one at that. The current colors seem appropriate to me. I think you could add some tropical plantings (in modern clean line pots) and some brightly colored furniture, but that is as far as I would go.

The stucco looks a little grey in the pics. It might feel a little more tropical and less modern if you painted it a whiter white and the grillwork a lighter color as well.

So you just want to enclose the top area to make it a place to sleep? Does it need to have a kitchen and bathroom or just a sleeping area? I am not an architect but you might want to ask more direct questions like " How can I enclose this upper floor to make it livable?". It looks like you live in a very mild climate. Perhaps you should put up wood walls with windows that match the design on the balcony panels. I am not a builder so I hope someone else has some ideas for you.

Hard to say just from your description. Might take a clever stair designer to come up with a better solution for you. Are you thinking for esthetics or function or both? Is this a remodel? Please give us some more info so we can help. Thanks, lefty47. This is an older home, and just as One Plan guessed it is a soil stack from the upstairs bathroom. You are probably right that the cost of a custom solution may outweigh the benefits. Another idea I had, along the lines of the worktop bin suggested by One Plan, is a recessed spatula and long-handled utensil holder. I found out that Lee Valley sells motorized tv lift kits like the one used in the video above. It would be a matter of getting the contractor to build the box to go on the lift. I'm still a bit hung up on the idea, though it probably falls into your cost-outweighs-benefit category! I may bring this photo around with me when interviewing prospective contractors, just to see how they answer!

Constance and the Creative Mind Design team, you've done an amazing job in restoring a heritage house, and shining a light on a precious family story! The original house is clearly well built for the environment: large overhanging roof, windows tucked neatly under. Love the rusticated exterior and the big arches in the porte cochere too. Haunted only to those who don't know the story! I also love that the original house has been updated to serve the needs of the current, without forgetting the past. Those pink mosaic tiles and wrought iron grilles fit in very nicely in the new house. The airwell seems to bridge the new and old worlds perfectly too.

I was thinking of using a light beige/cream color for the entire exterior. Should I mix it up with white? Or should I go full mono color using light cream?

Since you have white and black windows, fans, doors, gates, you need a light tan beige rather than an off white cream - off white will just look dirty next to the white. Something that goes warm neutral instead of yellow will work well.

Tropical can mean lots of different things to different people - pick one accent color - a lagoon type green-blue-green with large leafy palms, and add a sail shade (triangle shaped) in the same tone to the upper deck.

I think beige/cream/white is fine with another lightish color for the grillwork and windows. I would do a single color for all of the stucco if you want it to read less modern.
