Granite flooring with rough patches

We just took over the HDB resale flat - and we found the granite flooring in the living room has areas of rough patches - see photo enclosed. Interestingly, the floor in the dining area is fine - smooth and beautiful. We like the granite floor and are hoping to be able to keep it. Any advice as to what we can do? Will grinding and polishing help?

    One solution is to polish which will help to remove the rough surface.
