Design Dilemma Living Room

how big a rug for my space?

My living area in my new apartment is 2m by 3.3m.

The 2 m end is flanked by a sofa it’s entire length and the other end has a sideboard.

No intentions yet for a coffee table or other chairs. Perhaps an ottoman.

So there’s no width left to play with.

What size rug would you guys suggest?

Try a 2 m x 3 meter rug.

Would have suggested colours and style for you if you had added a picture of your room in your query.

It says: "If you want your rug to be centred in the room, have about 30 to 40 centimetres of border (edge of rug to the wall) all around it. However, if the rug is being used to highlight a living area or a piece of furniture, have it at least 10 to 15 centimetres larger than the furniture or area."

You already have your accent colour as your sofa pillows (log roll pillows). I would take one of them shopping with me to get a rug that has that colour in it. It doesn't need to be a lot of that colour (I love the idea of burgandy rug here...but it might be too much with your monotone scheme). You can find a large rug that incorporates that red/raspberry in it so that you have a colour that is now your accent.

I'm not sure if there are any hard and fast rules but I think it needs to be probably at least half the width of the sofa to look good. In your case I would probably go for something 65-75% of the width of the sofa with maybe the height around 55-70% of the length. You could also try a large portrait style, the best thing to do is to cut out a template and hang it on the wall to see what you like as chesterfields are normally quite low. I'd also move the sofa slightly but are the ceiling lights positioned over the sofa? Hard to tell from the camera angle. I also thought of the Vintage film pics but maybe not original. My basement has a slight film theme with lighting ( actually I have a Chesterfield and cowhide too!) and I have large black and white pics of movie stars but not from film clips ie the iconic Michael Caine shot taken by David Bailey. I also love vintage travel posters, I know they've been around for quite a while now but you could find a destination that means something to you. Or look at industriał style art with a pop of colour. Or an abstract with pops of colour.

you can mainly go for Scandinavian and the touch of Singapore can be through arts, accent pieces...say cushions with peranakan tiles, etc.. It also depends on how big your space is. Scandinavian style tends to work well on small to medium sized space as it is clean and uncluttered. the Singapore style or oriental style can be pretty "heavy " when the proportion and composition are not balance.

Hi, I agree with Gary, do a hotel setting to make it more appealing. Here’s an idea. Remove the partition, move the closet down and add a big slider freeing up the space for a spacious bedroom with lounge seating/dining by the window. Think about the tv wall where it can have a proper work desk space. And do you have balcony? Perfect !
