Hi, I am currently renovating my kitchen. Pictures of my tiles are below. I love wood grain cabinets. However, i am at odds as to whether I should get wood grained or solid coloured laminates. My designer told me that I can only choose from Arova n Jennings brand. He does offer EDL as well. But I do not like the solid colours from any of these laminate companies. A solid black colour will leave finger print marks easily. And I think grey is going to make my kitchen look monochromatic which I feel might get boring overtime. Some advice is really appreciated.

Hi Sivasankari Suppas,

Your designer and you probably have decided what laminates to choose by now as your tiles have been chosen and laid on floor and walls. To go against the grain now would not be advisable as we can clearly see that a solid colour will work now as you have lots of pattern on the wall and floor.

We would recommend a solid charcoal colour so it will appear dark (black) but not be solid as we can understand your concern of finger prints and marks when its solid black.

We would then suggest a white or light grey colour or the kitchen top.

Thanks, lefty47. This is an older home, and just as One Plan guessed it is a soil stack from the upstairs bathroom. You are probably right that the cost of a custom solution may outweigh the benefits. Another idea I had, along the lines of the worktop bin suggested by One Plan, is a recessed spatula and long-handled utensil holder. I found out that Lee Valley sells motorized tv lift kits like the one used in the video above. It would be a matter of getting the contractor to build the box to go on the lift. I'm still a bit hung up on the idea, though it probably falls into your cost-outweighs-benefit category! I may bring this photo around with me when interviewing prospective contractors, just to see how they answer!

How can I hide an existing column in the kitchen

You could use the column for something useful like hanging utensils or cooking tools if you have the height or a towel rack or if you want to just hide it you could put fairy lights on/around it to give a homely feel.my personal opinion would be if there is a ledge you should get some vintage alcohol bottles and put them there as decoration and it works nice in most households.if no ledge just get a wine rack and screw it to the column
