I started with a design dilemma, and got some good advice from some very kind people on Houzz. The transformation took more time to figure out then it did to complete the construction.

My advice to anyone wanting a new space is to do your research, without rushing into decisions, which can be difficult when working with some, because of the 'sale deadline'! Guess what? There will always be another sale!

In fact, by taking my time I ended up being able to keep all of the organization options I wanted and ended up with such a great sale that I was able to upgrade to custom solid wood cabinets and drawers for the same price as my original stock cabinets with MDF panels.

By customizing the sizes of cabinets, I was able to create more space to open up the small kitchen for a spacious feel. My contractor helped me achieve the built in pantry wall which puts all of my spices, canned goods, etc., right in front of me to see exactly what I have or need to replenish.

But, my favorite part of this kitchen is what the contractor did with my narrow and deep closet. It was widened and turned into a dry bar with microwave and roll out storage. Having a place for my coffee maker and microwave was key, so I could keep the new expanse of counter space visible!

Removing the 'bump up' wall of my original counter offered a more open concept feel, which was a great improvement.

I was hoping to see a photo because I thought maybe there are other options than curtain dividers. If you say that the space is not that big, I think it should not be closed with curtain dividers. It could stay open but separated with a sofa table with a vase or a lamp.

Your drawing does not show enough information to render much advice. I assume the few dimensions you show are in centimeters ? If you are looking for advice from US designers we are work in inches. The best advice I can offer is to hire a certified kitchen designer. Believe me it will be well worth the money when you consider the dollars spent on a kitchen remodel. You can find designers in your area thru NKBA.org.

Well, I've been renovating this house for now on 12 years on and off, and the stress at times can be real tough. Most of it is due to the person who is helping me renovate. Their lack of communication skills and doing what they think I want rather than sticking to the budget and/or plan is a bone of contention. So, I think it can be a stressful situation but not if you clearly have someone working with you not against you all the time! (The person has Asperger's and it's really hard to keep him on task and not tangent off....sigh.....getting there though!) Ask ask and ask around, check reviews online, ask to look at their work of the tradies, if you are going to use them. Plumbers, plasterers will often give you a reduced rate if you do some of the leg work yourself, like prep walls, or get all the pipes etc together. Have a clear understanding where you are going and have a time frame and try to stick to it. DO NOT start renos in late summer when the weather is still good, the weeks run away real fast and soon it is dark and changeable and the project not finished!

Hi Rachel, yes I know not many people like this kind of style. As mentioned, I don't feel very strongly for it, but i feel that this style is the most unpretentious and honest. Straight to the point, very functional. Not sure if I am explaining it properly, as I have no design background.
