what is the code for outward swinging French door overhead cover?

I live in the Seattle area. I wanted to install outward swinging French doors to replace my sliding glass door. But I have been told that code says I have to have an overhead cover (eve) of 43-inches? Why? I have 3 exterior doors 2 36-inch swing in (1 front & 1 rear utility room) and the slider that goes out on to a large deck. I do not have room inside to do standard in swinging French doors. Any ideas
