How do I modernise home?

Hi everyone!

We just bought a 20+ years old home and would like to give its looks a fresh update. House looks to be mid-century modern in style (correct me if I’m wrong!). We love how it looks, but are keen to know what we can do to enhance its looks. We are also looking to build some carpentry, redo the kitchen and possibly build a dry kitchen/ bar area.

Would love to hear your suggestions on the choice of carpentry colours, and what else we should do! Thanks!

I have a recess built into the walls which is great, but not helpful in this situation. We will always default to the easiest method when it comes to daily tasks and the caddie is probably the best solution it you are renting and not allowed to drill the tiles, but it is not as easy to put things in a caddie as it is a shelf. If you can drill the tiles, a shelf will be easier. Be as minimalist as possible with stuff on it as well. There are plenty of other options in cushion storage from storage shops too. Good luck.

I have a cupboard where I store all of my shoes, but the ones I wear most often are just out by the front door. Depending on how many people live in your house, maybe a shoe cupboard with enough shelves for everyone would work out best.

Hi Rachel, This is quite easy to fix. Firstly I would brighten the space up with a white paint such as Nippon Violet Whispers (warm white), this will give you a good base to work from. Then I would replace your table with one that is larger. This table is too small to be useful and is making your entrance feel small. I recommend using teak and keeping this console table simple in design. On the wall I would place artwork - the bigger the better as this will make a dramatic statement. Then add some lighting (table lamp on console table) and decorative items and voila your entrance will be instantly chic! I have mocked up two options for you - one is based on blues, the other pinks, so depending on your preference you can go either way.
