Houzz Tour: Powdery Pastels Bring a Wintery Vibe to a New Flat
This home proves that Scandi style is not just white and pale wood
The owners’ penchant for pastel colours, particularly baby pink and powder blue, and the simple cosiness of the Scandinavian style inspired the design team of Mr Shopper Studio to think out of the box. Designers Ben Teo, Sheldon Toh, and Joanna Chia came up with a concept that befits the homeowners’ laid-back lifestyle – “wintery pastel Scandinavian”.
An eye-catching feature wall painted in the theme colours welcomes guests in the main living space. Its geometric design adds interest to an otherwise flat wall. The rug and cushions also feature geometric details.
One of the main challenges for the team was sourcing for furniture in the specific colour palette. “The colours of the furniture had to be carefully selected to fit the theme. We also opted for mostly loose pieces instead of customised ones to free up some space,” says Teo.
The couple has a pet dog, so there was also a concern about using materials that can withstand the dog’s scratching habits. “They hoped to minimise using furniture made of wood and replace it with a more sturdy material. It was a little challenging as their theme is Scandinavian, a style which features lots of wood,” Teo says.
The team proposed different materials to replace wood legs. “For most of the table legs, we picked a steel frame base which is powder-coated in white to suit the theme. A stainless steel base would probably not match,” he says. The dining chairs and bench also have metal frames to keep the look consistent.
To make the home appear more spacious, a wall separating the living space and a bedroom was knocked down. It was replaced with an aluminium-framed glass partition to allow light to permeate and create a visual connection.
The bedroom was transformed into a study with a reading nook. Various wood tones make their way into the room’s design, harmonising with the pastel colours that are distributed throughout the room.
A shaggy cushion and a circular rug are lively additions. “Geometric details help add some fun elements to the room,” Teo says.

The same vinyl flooring was used throughout the home, including the kitchen, to emphasise the seamless flow of spaces.
Aside from the main cooking and washing area, the designers added built-in cabinets that form an L-shape on one wall. This is to provide the owners more usable surface for prepping and display.

“The owners are fans of subway tiles, so we used it for the backsplash,” says Teo. The white solid surface countertop makes for a clean complement to the dark grey laminate cabinets and overhead shelves.
The team worked to achieve the same clean-lined design in the master bathroom with minimal work. “Due to budget constraints, we only overlaid one wall. To match with the rest of the existing white tiles, we chose brick-style tiles in white with grey veining,” Teo says. “We also picked out white sanitary fittings to avoid a big contrast that can steal the attention away from the wall tiles.”
The master bedroom is a dreamy setting dressed up in pastel colours. The greyish blue accent wall becomes the perfect backdrop for a trio of artwork that exudes a soothing wintery vibe. “The pink groove lines of the grey wardrobe also represent winter trees, which further enhances the theme,” Teo says.
