On second thought, would a white ceiling make it seem larger?
Paint pole a bright color?
exposed ceiling with wainscoting
grey wainscoting
Here's a grey one, with ledge. Would that look good with a black ceiling?
wainscot ledge for drinks or decorations?

It looks better when the ceiling color coordinates with the decor.
It looks "not polished", it looks "off".
Here's one that's not painted, but I'd probably prefer painted one color.
This ceiling has more than one color
Most exposed ceilings I've found so far are painted one color. This was festive with the hanging lights in addition to the actual lights.
Another option for shelves under the stairs. Maybe the TV side would look like this, since the couch would cover part of the wall. On the exercise side, the shelves at the bottom of the steps would be deeper.
I like the style of these shelves for the Basement. Cabinets at bottom, a counter top and the arched tops.
Basement rec room - there is wasted space under the steps which we could capitalize on. It could also be a playhouse, cabinets, a cushioned bench, drawers...
This isn’t so bad either. I wouldn’t have books though.
These games are displayed artfully. I can do that!
Actually there’s some beauty to displaying some toys since they are not being used regularly.
Love built-ins, love bookshelves. However, I’m spooked about using them on one of the rec room walls, because of a new water problem. We already have an entertainment center in the basement we like, but it might work better in a different location in the rec room. Main things to store are games, puzzles and toys. So basement storage might be better off enclosed, as they tend not to be tidy. OR, would seeing the games & puzzles encourage us to use them more? NOT books, because our “Den” upstairs serves as our library.
