The colour of sunshine, daffodils, butter and other good things, yellow is a shade that brings happiness. For this young professional couple, their favourite colour was a central decorative theme for their new home designed by Wilson and Vandra Png from Studio FortyFour.
“The requirements for their home revolve around their daughter,” explains Vandra Png from Studio FortyFour, the design studio behind this sunny design.

The cold, utilitarian aspect of the industrial style is made more family-friendly and warm through the use of colour.
“The industrial elements come from the concrete look floor tiles – Arctic Patinata from Hafary – dark grey and wood laminate and grey marble tiles in the kitchen,” says Png.
The matt surface and the dark colour of the cabinet makes the bulk recede as does the subtle tapering of the base units. “The tapered design on the kitchen counter reduces its bulkiness, and the pendant lamp brings focus to the counter,” explains Png.

The open-plan living and dining area has a dedicated space for the couple’s young daughter.
“The clients asked for a play area in the living room so that while they are in the kitchen, they are still able to watch her play,” explains Png.
“Yellow is their favourite colour,” says Png, “so we used a yellow wall to connect the living, dining and play spaces.” The play area is decorated with storage from Ikea and wall decals from Etsy that can be easily removed and updated.
“We also created a built-in suspended sideboard to create additional storage space in the living area,” says Png.

The balcony area also got a makeover with the addition of new tiles and stands for plants. The owners are excited to test out their green thumbs now that they have the space.
The homeowners opened up the wall between the master bedroom and the second bedroom to create a larger wardrobe space and a ‘partition’ wall between the two rooms for easier access.

The Studio FortyFour team designed built-ins to create dedicated storage for their clients.
“The suspended dresser tucked into the recess is where the wife does her daily skincare regime and it’s also where the couple store their accessories,” explains Png.

Sticking with simple neutral colours like grey and white, the bedroom still has a touch of the couple’s favourite colour. “The yellow armchair allows the couple to do some reading before bedtime and also adds a pop of colour in the muted bedroom,” says Png.

A sweeter bright colour was chosen for the child’s bedroom. “The bright coral wall adds liveliness and we paired it with white and light wood furnishings,” says Png.
What looks like wallpaper above the coloured portion is actually the result of removable decals from Etsy.

The chevron layout of the bathroom wall tiles elongates the ceiling height.
“The most significant issue we had was the tiling in the master bathroom. It was a test of the tiler’s skills as the width of the chevron tiles is slightly wider than the bottom tiles. The tiler had to cut every single piece to connect the grout lines of the bottom tiles,” explains Png.
