Houzz Tour: This Semi-D Celebrates Minimalism And Colonial Flair
The three-storey landed house was redesigned to reflect a mix of modern, minimalist, and colonial styles
Wanting a complete makeover for their three-storey semi-detached home, the homeowners engaged Alvin Ling of The Scientist to work on both the interior and the facade of the home.
“The design inspiration is a mix of the minimalist and colonial styles,” shares Ling.
The minimalist concept is evident even right from the exterior of the house, with the clean lines, grey colour palette, and the use of glass, and natural stone (Maple Velvet and Maple Sculptured from Hafary). The colonial aesthetic however, is apparent through the finer details, particularly in the carpentry.

Ling shares that the design of the feature wall in the living room was a collaboration between him and the homeowners.
While it was designed to house the audio-visual equipment and wiring, Ling jazzed up the white wall with an eye-catching pattern using a rose gold laminate.

The kitchen is modern and luxurious with a colour palette of white and blue, accented by the rose gold hardware and light fixtures.
Ling subtly included a touch of the colonial aesthetic by using wainscoting detail by the side of the cabinets.
Here in the stairway that leads to the bedrooms, a deep shade of green paint channels a sense of cosiness and relaxation.
The master bedroom is situated within its own wing in the house, which was designed complete with an en suite bathroom, walk-in wardrobe, and study.
In keeping with the modern minimalist decor style, Ling customised the headboard and TV console, and added a marble feature wall above the bed to accentuate the spaciousness of the bedroom.

Just behind the sleeping area sits the en suite bathroom.
“The bathroom is separated into three parts: a shower stall, the toilet and a dressing area,” explains Ling.

An unusual but practical design concept, the shower stall in the master bedroom features double rain showers and shower heads.
Right outside the master bedroom is the study and walk-in wardrobe.
Taking advantage of the length of the room, Ling proposed a walk-in wardrobe that spans the entire room length of 9 metres. The rich blue chosen reflects the homeowners’ likes and the colonial-style moulding bring a modern charm.
The other side of the room was turned into a study for the homeowners. The space is also outfitted with an entertainment system and a bar.
The same blue hue is used to add a pop of colour to the bathrooms.
This bathroom takes on a more dramatic look. The dark hues from the tiles add depth to the space and a sense of luxury.
