Living in space-starved Singapore, I am particularly interested to see how homeowners tackle storage solutions for small homes and how they maximise their floor space. I believe that with all things, less is more!

As the team design from The Scientist worked on her studio apartment many years ago, the wife turned to The Scientist again to renovate her new marital home.
House at a Glance
Who Lives Here: Newly-married business consultants in their 30s
Location: Tanjong Rhu
Type of Property: 3-bedroom condominium apartment
Size: 1647 Square Feet (Approx. 153 Square Metres)
Designers Alvin Ling and Cynthia Lim met with the couple to figure out their needs and preferences. The wife had a strong sense of how she wanted their home would look like: pink, elegant, and glamorous. The husband, on the other hand, preferred something sleek, and was not too keen on the pink theme.
After the design team had proposed some colour schemes, the couple came to a compromise. The wife could decide on the colour of the living room and bedroom, while her husband could transform one of the rooms into a ‘man cave’.
The wife chose an eye-catching shade of pink – Baby Bud from Nippon Paint – and picked black for the trim on the ceiling.
As a result of the bold colours, the colour scheme of the furniture, which was selected by the homeowners, was kept muted.

An interesting feature that was done by the previous owners was the framed mirror behind the sofa. The new owners loved the classical, European appeal, but they felt it needed a facelift.
“We painted it black as the original colour made the house look tired,” say the designers.

The design team also incorporated the black and pink colour palette in the kitchen.
Here, the retro-chic SMEG fridge from the homeowner’s studio apartment anchors the room, and adds a playful touch to the space.

A soothing shade of purple (Irish Charm from Nippon Paint) sets the tone for the master bedroom, indicating elegance and romance.
The light-filled en suite bathroom is elegantly furnished and clad in marble-like tiles.
The presence of the bathtub gives an added touch of luxury to this contemporary-classic style bathroom.
Simply but practically furnished, the ‘man cave’ is where the husband spends his free time gaming and chilling out with his friends. Known as his “personal space”, it houses all his personal belongings like his clothing, shoes, and collection of games.
This bathroom follows a more modern decor style with its darker colour scheme, evoking a sense of cosiness.
