Principles of Design
UNITY/HARMONY: This bedroom represents unity because all parts of the design are related by the idea of swimming. The back wall shows a swimming pool, while there are multiple lifeguard related things around the room. For example, you can see one of these on the bed. Not only this, but the color relate to both a swimming pool and a lifeguard. A consistent color of red and blue are used throughout the room. This room also represents harmony because everything seems to go together without feeling boring or chaotic.
PROPORTION: This room represents proportion. You can see this with the blinds on the windows. When you look at the windows to the left, which are smaller windows, you can see each contain only one blind. But when you look at the window to the right you can see there is a larger window with two blinds. This proportion is 1:1:2.
SCALE: This room represents the principle of design of scale. The furniture in the room is carefully chosen to fit the room. This is seen with the couch, which lines the room perfectly. Clearly the couch is in scale with the size of the room. Even the table in the center is in scale with the couch. It has almost an identical shape and creates a perfect amount of space in between it and the couch.
EMPHASIS: This room represents emphasis. The focal point is clearly the red chair since your eyes are immediately drawn to it while looking at this room. The room still feels unified and the red chair doesn't have a competing feature. As you can see, the red chair is worthy to have as a focal point and definitely dominates it, but doesn't overpower the room.
RHYTHM: This picture represents radiation which is when lines flow outward from a central point like a sunburst. Clearly, this is seen on the left wall with the mirror, where multiple lines are extending out of it. This creates a pattern in this area, while causing us to follow the lines coming out of it to different parts of the room such as the crib. Radiation is just one way to achieve rhythm in a room.
BALANCE: This picture represents balance. It mostly represents symmetrical/formal balance as seen with identical chairs equally distributed on both sides. It also has two identical lamps on either side of the table on the back wall. However some asymmetrical/informal balance is also represented in this picture. This is seen on the table with the plants. Some of the plants are different heights from one another and they are not identical on both sides of the table. This allows for a more creative feel to the room, while still feeling traditional.
VARIETY/DETAILS: This room represents variety because even though there are a bunch of chairs, they are all different. They all have different details to them. Some have open spaces on the back of them, while others are completely closed off. They still provide some unity however, since they are all neutral colors.
