Houzz Tour: Music and Peranakan Influences Make This Condo Home
Personalised details turn this condo from standard to superb
Downsizing from an apartment twice the size of her new 700 square-foot condo, the owner asked designer Amanda Pang of AMP DESIGN CO. to create plenty of storage. This would keep her new home clutter-free and ever-ready for entertaining. An avid chorister, the owner also wanted her space to reflect her love of music.
To demarcate the entertainment area, the designer built it on a platform. The platform doubles as shoe storage, with its pull-out cabinets.
Floor-to-ceiling cabinets on two walls conceal a study desk on one side, and storage and a fold-out games table that the owner also uses as a dining table on the other. The built-in window bench has storage units hidden under the seats.
Under the TV console is a customised, hide-away coffee table.

For the open-concept kitchen, Pang designed an island on wheels, so the owner can adjust its position. “It serves a dual purpose as extra work table and chill-out space for her friends who visit,” the designer explains.
Vintage-style concrete ventilation blocks were used for the island counter, and Peranakan-style patterned tiles clad the backsplash for a Peranakan touch. “Turquoise and dark blue add a subtle colour to the space, and they’re also the client’s favourite hues,” Pang adds.
The laminated blue, white and wood feature panel beside the fridge is a sliding door that leads into the master bedroom.

The master bedroom enjoys a skyline vista of the city
Pang repeats the musical staff grille for the frosted glass wall concealing the master bedroom’s walk-in wardrobe. Facing the bed, she custom-built a hideaway dressing table with display cases for the owner’s bags, sunnies and specs. Behind the custom-designed bed, which houses the owner’s sports equipment, Pang used a textured paint finish called Swahili for a luxurious touch.

For both the master bathroom (not pictured) and common bathroom, Peranakan tiles were paired with subway tiles for that Peranakan-industrial aesthetic.

Who lives here: A professional in her 40s
Location: Boon Keng
Type of property: 2-bedroom condo
Size: 700 square feet
Project duration: 3 months
Designer in charge: Amanda Pang of AMP DESIGN CO.
Pang reworked the layout of the two-bedroom condo, hacking open the second bedroom to create an entertainment area where the owner can host mahjong or poker games for her friends. She designed a moveable island counter that would connect this space with the kitchen so the owner can serve her guests with ease.
Aesthetically, the owner wanted her home to be industrial in style, with subtle touches of her Peranakan culture and musical background. Pang transposed the musical staff with notes as a metal grille playing throughout the condo. Concrete ventilation blocks used on the island counter and the living room’s feature wall bring the industrial element, while Peranakan patterned tiles are featured in the kitchen and bathroom.
