Houzz Tour: Rustic Meets Luxury in This 5-Room Flat
Dark and textured finishes transform this apartment to a surprisingly cosy abode
“Both husband and wife like dark warm colours, natural wood and rustic elements in the house”, Tan says. Before working on the aesthetics, however, the designer had a bit of rejigging to do on the 5-room flat’s layout.
By knocking down the non-structural kitchen wall, Tan was able to create an open-concept dry kitchen, as well as apportion some space for a proper foyer.
By knocking down the non-structural kitchen wall, Tan was able to create an open-concept dry kitchen, as well as apportion some space for a proper foyer.
“We suspended the storage and shoe cabinet to decrease its bulk, and make the foyer’s floor area look bigger,” Tan says. A tinted bronze mirror and clear glass display case help to visually expand this space, too.
With the newly expanded communal space – consisting of the dry kitchen, living and dining areas – the owners are able to entertain their guests around the kitchen island that doubles as a bar counter.
To give this communal yet multi-functional space its harmonious look, the designer used concrete-look vinyl planks in the floor. A wood-look fluted panel connects the shoe cabinet in the foyer to the TV feature wall, clad in dark concrete-textured laminate, in the living area.
Tinted mirrors and black tinted glass used in the dry kitchen contrast with the rustic finishes of the concrete-look and wood laminates, and add a touch of luxury to the space.
Laminates: Lamitak; Sofa: Grey and Sanders; Solid wood dining table: The Table Guy; Lighting Accessories: Northstar Lighting; Flooring Vinyl: Floor Expert

A wet kitchen (with service yard) is segregated from the dry kitchen by three sliding door panels. The dark, rustic look carries into this smaller space through the colours of the laminates used on the kitchen cabinets – a dark grey on the top cabinets and lighter grey wood-look on the bottom ones. A concrete-look quartz surface was used for the kitchen countertop.

Two bedrooms were joined to create a master bedroom with a large walk-in wardrobe. The custom-built dresser converts into a work desk when needed. It is clad in leather-texture laminate for a luxurious feel.
Black tinted glass doors can close off the walk-in wardrobe when the owners don’t want tit visible. The open display shelving is clad in Boston York Teak laminate.
The concrete and wood combination continues in the bathroom.
