Sven's Deep Thoughts
Look how they painted these posts. I kinda like it!
Just the very, very top of the post-cap is painted
This is almost identical to what ours would look like: - light footboards - white kickboards - white posts - brown post-caps - brown railing (except our railing and post caps would be darker)
dark post-cap
Dark post caps. And note how the rail goes up and hits the first post, then to maintain the continuity of the railing line going all the way up (and uninterrupted by posts) they added or painted a swatch of railing up to that upper post cap.
Similar to ours. The rail goes up, hits a white post low, then comes out the other side higher and dark. Also, their footboards are darker than ours. All-white posts
Here you sort of get the tracking line with the shadow of light paralleling the railing, below the steps
Theyve traced a CONTINUOUS line on the edge of the stairs -- up, across, up, across. So maybe my one continuous line would work.
This one is interesting because the rail is painted but neither the posts, nor the post-caps are painted. So, for me, it doesn't work (I think?), because the white of the post breaks up the line of the railing.
This is the first one I've seen that is like ours insofar as you cannot see each individual stair from the side. Instead, there is the one long piece of wood in front of the sides of each step. Also, the posts are white. So, what you have is one very clean line of the rail itself going from left to right, then up. I like it! But, I also like the idea of painting just the one thin line parallel to the rail, right below the balusters.
This one of the posts painted does not work, again, because I hate the light brown rail and posts.
This is interesting because the rail is dark but the posts white. but it's starker than ours will be, because our actual footpads on each stair are much lighter than those in this pic.
This one doesn't work for me, beacuse the handrail is not painted dark.
Again, the light brown really doesn't work for me.
Now, this one caught my eye because of the caps on the posts, and not because I like it, but because I DON'T. So, I had to ask myself why I don't like it, when I liked the post caps painted in the pic we saw together. Then, I realized why I don't like the painted post caps in this pic. It's not the painted caps I dislike; it's the COLOR of the painted caps. I don't like the light brown.
The all-white everything means there's no distractions from the stair/bannister and it forces the eye to decide what precisely it is you like about stairs/bannister/baluster/posts. IN this case, what really catches the eye is the gorgeous, snake-like rail AND the SIDES of the stairs, higher-up as they seem to ascend into heaven. There is something eye-catching about those little lines. So, what if we, to the degree our staircase allows, paint just one stripe dark where the side of the stairs is.
