Con: Paint tends to cost more.Painted cabinets aren’t exactly budget-friendly. They can be, but if you’re comparing them with stained cabinets, you’ll find that they often carry a steeper price tag. How much higher? The answer ultimately depends on who’s making the cabinets and where you’re buying them from, but typically they cost about 10 to 15 percent more. That’s hundreds or thousands of extra dollars you’re forking over, depending on the size of your kitchen.
Con: Paint hides character features. Paint is thicker than stain, so it doesn’t get absorbed by wood the way stain does. If you want to see grains and knots in plain sight, you probably shouldn’t go with painted cabinets. Though you’ll still see the grain imprints in woods like oak and hickory, they’ll mostly be hidden behind whichever coat of paint you choose. Some homeowners may see this characteristic as a plus (those who want clean and modern cabinetry, for instance). But those who are fond of wood’s natural beauty will chalk this down as a negative.
After. An 8½-by-2½-foot island provides space for people to gather around and chat or help with food prep. An overhang at one end makes room for counter stools for casual dining and entertaining. The actual footprint of the kitchen didn’t change, but the designer removed the drop ceiling and created a flat ceiling, adding crown moulding to give a sense of additional height and reflect the Georgian style of the home. Caesarstone countertops and painted wood cabinets add a European feel. Panos chose Caesarstone because “it doesn’t require maintenance and these people really use their kitchen. And I loved the veining on this particular stone.” Calacatta Nuvo countertops: Caesarstone

With dark wood paneling, navy tile and only 55 square feet of space, the room felt somewhat cramped. “We wanted to open it up and make it lighter but still have some fun with color and accessories,” Cramer says. “Her house is filled with treasures from all her travels. She is a really fun, eclectic woman.”A renovation allowed Cramer to start from scratch. The old vanity, paneling, floor and shower were removed. The new space features walls painted in Benjamin Moore’s Simply White and floors tiled in a gray geometric encaustic cement tile. “Since I was going to do turquoise on the shower walls, I needed something neutral on the floors,” Cramer says. “Gray is such a great contrast with turquoise.”Floor tile: Tulum II, Cement Tile Shop
9. Appliance columns. In today’s market, people expect to be able to customize their product purchases, and individual fridge and freezer columns allow you to include the exact size of refrigerator or freezer you need, in whatever combination and placement best suits your needs.Compared to a traditional fridge-freezer combo with fixed proportions, the choices feel a lot less limited, so you can expect more homeowners to pursue this option in 2018 and beyond.
If space is an issue, you can get clever with your baking station. This custom island has a baking station extension that tucks away.
Pantry or armoire-like cabinets can open up to reveal an ample baking area. This is good for those who like to leave the area a little jumbled with equipment and ingredients. All you have to do is close the doors and you have your kitchen back to an uncluttered state.
Windows with less. With a dominant wall feature like this one, a window treatment would be superfluous. Leaving the windows bare allows the fabulous decorated wall to do the talking.
