Staycationing? Take a Tip From These Bedroom Escapes
The holidays are upon us, but not everyone has the time (or energy) to get away – a dreamy bedroom can help with that!
Zen and simple
Lighter-hued wood in sleek, clean lines evoke contemporary Japanese design and the serenity that’s so much a part of it. Use pale colours such as light grey to add visual depth.

Channeling Scandi
Same light-hued wood, different application – and you have a Scandinavian-inspired escape. Pile on the plush beddings, crank up the aircon, make sure you have window sheers that will soften the harsh sunlight, and you can stay in bed all day (or all weekend)!

Tropicana getaway
Lazy breakfasts in bed, visions of a beach playing in your head – a bedroom in tropical colonial style is all you need to recreate the magic of past seaside holidays. With a resort-romantic four-poster bed, use crisp white sheets, and add tropical prints via soft furnishings.

Harajuku dreaming
A different way to envision Japan is through the vibrant colour of its kawaii culture. This sophisticated version brings together traditional elements such as the shoji screen effects on the wall, with pops of Harajuku style through the colour.

Sail away
Driftwood-surfaced walls and nautical accessories can make you dream that you’re in a boathouse rather than your urban apartment.

When clashing works
Notice that most of these bedrooms have plain beddings (sometimes accented by printed cushions or throws). That’s because it’s very rare that printed sheets evoke a restful ambience. But in this boutique hotel-style bedroom, carefully considered clashing prints and pops of bold colour actually work. The key is to consider scale and colour-coordination when buying your clashing prints. If you’re not very confident about it, work with your designer or stylist to get this je ne sais quoi.

Old school Singapore
If you prefer to drift away to dreamland in a nostalgic setting, nothing says ‘old school’ more than Good Morning sheets. A Tadao Ando-inspired cement wall adds a little edginess (and the ubiquitious Japanese inspiration) to the mix, whilst contemporary Asian art pieces bring some cheekiness into your space – what better place to snuggle in than ‘home, truly…’?

Retreat in the city
It’s rare to find such a lush, green view from your bedroom when you live in the heart of Singapore, but you can replicate the feel of this mountain-inspired escape (which is actually located in Marine Parade) with dark wood veneer surfaces and similarly toned solid wood furniture. A plush rug and heavy, tactile window treatments enhance the cocooning feel of this room.
Pro tip: Choose plain, neutral bedlinen. Interior stylist Caroline Chin-Geyler of Arete Culture suggests crisp white linen as “it’s unfussy and sophisticated”. They don’t distract from the bedroom’s design, and they are visually restful.
