The little girl’s room features a daintier, birds-and-butterflies wallpaper on the sloped ceiling. “With the ceiling in this motif, I feel like it’s very safe and user-friendly for several years, into maybe even their preteen years, depending on how specific the child’s tastes end up developing,” Morris says. “I just thought this is such a great thing for kids to look at as they shut their eyes, both of these papers.”
In this dreamy master bath from Kristin Drohan Collection, a double-sided fireplace warms the bath and the bedroom at the same time, so you can follow up your relaxing soak with a cozy bedtime routine. Tip: If you have the room, an angled tub, pictured, or one positioned with a bit of extra space between the tub and the wall will make for easier cleaning. Transitional Bedroom by Kristin Drohan Collection and Interior Design Kristin Drohan Collection and Interior Design A gas or electric fireplace makes the most practical choice for a bedroom or bathroom fireplace — turning it on and off is as simple as flicking a switch.

Plaids and stripes, please. This cabin in the Minnesota woods features a cheery kids’ room in a classically preppy palette. Instead of ladders, the upper bunks have their own sets of entry stairs, as well as a railing to keep young ones safe. The lower left bed jutting into the room forms a pleasant departure from the symmetry that characterizes the rest of the room. Plus, it’s roomy enough for grown-ups to sleep in.
Black-and-white beauty. A high-contrast palette of black, white and tan brings sophistication to this children’s space on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina. Like the first photo featured in this story, the room features six beds, and there are safety railings for the upper bunks. Slumber party, here we come!
Room for six. What’s better than one bunk bed? How about six? We can imagine some cousins or buddies having a grand old time — though perhaps getting very little sleep — in this Minneapolis room decked out for family gatherings and slumber parties. The railing on the horizontal upper bunk is a nice safety feature. (We’d recommend adding some rugs to the floors just in case though.)
Inside the loft is Jack’s bed and desk.
This lofted space is in the basement and is currently 14-year-old Jack’s bedroom. Underneath the loft are bars that were installed so the children can swing from them.
Described as sheltering and as protective as evergreen trees, Shaded Spruce brings the soothing colors of the forest inside. “I find the Pantone color trends evoke the emotion of true-to-life experiences that we all relate to,” Rolf says.
Think Beyond the Typical Headboard Some bedrooms are too tight to fit a bed with a bulky headboard. This DIY one made of wood planks is affixed to the wall, taking up no floor space. You can also use things like shutters, fencing, an iron gate, macrame or a large piece of art to create a wall-hung headboard.

Why we love it: The farmhouse-inspired details, including the wood ceiling, iron fixtures and Dutch door, mix beautifully with the elegant elements: the height of the ceiling, luxurious fireplace and expansive seating area. Neutral tones, simple details and luxe finishes bring the whole room together.
Why we love it: Simplicity is key in farmhouse design, and this East Coast bedroom mixes that with a little bit of luxury, including an en suite bathroom, wood-burning fireplace and desk with a view. Warm wood floors, white wood-paneled walls and ceiling, along with rustic wood furniture contribute an overall casual, rustic elegance.
