Houzz Tour: Playful Pop Art Meets Elegance in This Apartment
Pop art pieces and bold patterns are tempered by clean-lined bespoke furnishings to good effect
A world of visual splendour defines this brand new condominium unit designed by business development director Anne Teng and designer Agatha Teng from A.RK Interior Design. “The homeowners are a young, well-traveled couple who like the bold and retro fun of pop art,” says Anne. With commissioned art earning pride of place in major parts of the home, it’s not surprising the A.RK designers won the 2016 IDCS Design Excellence Award for these striking Warhol-inspired rooms.
Furniture with sleek silhouettes and metallic details make ideal partners with the eye-catching starburst wallpaper. While these understated furnishings don’t clash with the bold wall art or coverings, they still shine in their own right.
On the other side of the open-plan space is the dining zone which is bold and proud in its aesthetics as seen in the artwork and area rug. Despite the visual drama, the dining set of turquoise and white hues does not fade into the background thanks to the sleek brass details.
“The homeowners were not afraid to experiment with colour,” says Teng. Their fearless decorating style is especially apparent in the dining room’s choice of art. Besides whetting appetites with its vivacious spectrum of sunset colours, the personality-filled focal point makes the perfect conversation starter.
The lack of space did not deter the homeowners from infusing colour into their sleeping quarters. A Fauvism-inspired painting of Marilyn Monroe adds visual interest. The bespoke four-poster bed is made of acrylic and chrome. Teng explains: “The traditional four-poster frame is made of wood and the bulky outline would be ill-fitting for this small space. Acrylic, on the other hand, looks lighter visually.”
Fabric panels scale the master bedroom and create a plush but serene setting. Having pendant lights as bedside lamps makes practical sense as they bring a lightweight presence and don’t take up any tabletop space.
The edgy graffiti-style art of a ‘dripping’ Chanel logo graces the wall in the private areas. This thought-provoking piece adds a gallery-like appeal to the sophisticated living space.
One of the two common bedrooms has been turned into a guest bedroom and the other, a study. The immaculately-staged guest bedroom is dressed in dark brown wallpaper, which contrasts stunningly with the cheery tones of the area rug and wall art.
Not just a workstation, this room pulls double duty as a recreation space. Facilitating the lounge function of the room is a custom-built bar counter which has been integrated with the study desk. The counter features customised compartments for wine bottles and a niche to house the Smeg mini fridge.
A wall of Andy Warhol’s famed Campbell’s Soup Cans takes pride of place in the study. These reproductions are neatly displayed in a grid. The no-holds-barred decorating style of the homeowners and their dedicated designers have created a distinctive, one-of-a-kind living space.
