Blue – it’s extremely versatile, incredibly calming, and one shade is set to be 2017’s colour of the year. Check out these creative ways to use blue hues and make a statement in your home.

Paint walls and woodwork alike
Deep blue walls look fantastic in a traditional home like this one. The ample natural light here allows dark flooring and furniture to be added without the space becoming too gloomy.

The doors, skirting and architraves have also been painted in the same shade, which creates a seamless block of colour around the room and makes the space feel calm.

Create a restful bedroom
Blue is an ideal colour for your bedroom as it has a restful effect. Here, three shades of blue work harmoniously together to create a tranquil space.

There’s quite a heavy injection of pattern in this room, but the softer shades of blue in the wallpaper and quilt stop it overpowering the space. The navy upholstered headboard takes centre stage and makes the bed look cosy and inviting.

Go dark in the kitchen
The dark blue on these kitchen cabinets and walls creates an atmospheric space. To prevent it from being too sombre, the white backsplash and worktops brighten the functional areas and make this a practical room in which to cook.

The blue and white patterned tiles on the floor tie the two colours together, while the wooden stools and copper pendant lights add warmth to the scheme.

Choose brighter blues
If you prefer lighter hues, then why not choose a brighter tone of blue for your kitchen cabinets? The tiles here contain the same blue shade, which creates a solid block of colour and contrasts well with the white walls.

Add accents with furniture
Dark blue is a great colour to use on upholstery, as it will disguise spills. The blue sofa is the main feature in this whitewashed room and adds a darker dimension to the space. The faded Persian rug ties the colours of the furniture and flooring together without stealing the limelight from the sofa.

Paint a shiny backdrop
The walls, ceiling and woodwork here have been painted in a high-gloss blue. It’s a good decision, as the glossy surface allows the light to bounce off the walls and keeps the room nice and bright.

I love the intensity of colour this paint brings, but it doesn’t overpower the room. Instead, the blue walls form the perfect backdrop to let the brightly coloured pieces of furniture have all the attention.

Make a feature of your fifth wall
A patterned wallpaper on a ceiling is a bold idea, but it could be overbearing. However, the harmonious shades of muted blue in this pattern add a prominent feature that’s understated and doesn’t compete with the other design features of the space.

Mix old and new
This traditional-style dining table looks great in the modern white warehouse space, creating the perfect mix of old and new.

What takes this design that little bit further are the three blue chairs that add colour in an unexpected way. They’ve been distressed slightly, which helps them sit well with the older pieces of furniture. I really like the element of fun these blue chairs add.

Make a statement
Navy blue is a wonderfully bold colour to use on a feature wall. Here, the navy on the wood panelling teamed with white adds to the nautical feel of the room. The contrasting shades create a clean, fresh and restful space.

Lift a cosy corner
This sky blue wall panel with floating shelves and storage is a real feature. By painting the piano in the same shade, the whole thing blends together and gives full attention to the colourful art and items displayed. This is a great example of how to make what could be quite a chaotic focal point seem uniform.

The yellow accents are perfect and are reminiscent of sunlight in a blue sky.
