Having consulted The Scotsman - Advent is the earliest day to put up a tree 29 Nov this year, Twelfth night is 5 Jan 2021. Trees up twelve days before Christmas is very common. As so many people visit briefly in the week before and many people go away on holiday immediately afterwards it seems to work well.

Thanks spam, always a worry as to when to do the tree. Some so strict with their scheduling and traditions - that doesn't always work, PLUS the more stress you make the more stressful your Christmas will be.

Wishing everyone in the Houzz family a very merry and wonderful Christmas, hope you are ale to spend it with those you love and like, and that the year hasn't been to stressful for you all. Next year will be better. XOX

Crikey. It is the middle of summer in NZ at Christmas. My family have a pot luck dinner at someone's house (one of us usually volunteers to host). We have a BBQ, tell stories, look back at photo albums, play board games, do jigsaws, go for walks, go to the beach for a swim and beach cricket, and/or get out on the bikes.

For adults, we have "$5 Christmas": no one may spend more than $5 on a present for any one person (and have to be able to produce the receipt if challenged). This year we are going hard out and are only allowed to make or recycle existing things. We don't wrap presents: we may use recycled paper gift or shop bags that we have collected through the year; or we may simply make a flax bow with a label on it. Children get to make presents or buy $5 ones, but get 'proper' presents from the adults. We usually do lots of behind the scenes negotiation for getting what parents would like their kids to get. This year it is co-ordinated Lego kits again :-)

As very few NZ retailers use plastic shopping bags, for my presents this year, I am considering making roomy and sturdy cloth bags this year out of doubled-up thrift store men's winter shirts (those too damaged to be sold and destined for rags or flocking). I will design each bag with a colour palettes to suit each recipient :-)
