3 Clever Semi-Open Concept HDB Kitchens
Customising their cookie-cutter floor plans, these flats achieve that semi-open-concept kitchen design with panache
The open kitchen isn’t just a trend anymore; it’s a go-to solution for small homes. Plus, it’s a must-have for house-proud owners who like to entertain and share their foodie skills.
But Asian cooking aromas are the bane of open kitchens. Not only does the smell of wok hei, curry, salted fish and similarly flavour-packed dishes permeate the space (much less a shoebox apartment), the invisible greasy particles that these aromas carry with them also inevitably stick to walls, furniture, and clothes.

2. Sliding pocket doors
Home: 4-room flat
Designer: MMJ Design Loft
In this flat, the designers opted for a contrasting frame to mark the glass panels and pocket doors that have replaced the wall that was demolished. Here, too, the beam was left intact.

Pocket doors are space-saving compared to regular casement doors, as they don’t require the floor area to swing open. The designers were then able to create a more seamless look by continuing the run of bottom cabinet from the kitchen out to the dining nook that’s located off the kitchen. When the owners want to close off the kitchen for heavy cooking, or to keep air-conditioned coolness in the living-dining area, they can easily do so without visually separating the kitchen.
3. Folding windows and doors
Home: 5-Room flat in Choa Chu Kang
Style: Modern Country
Designer: DB Studio
A half-wall is completed with folding windows. When they’re open, the kitchen counter doubles as a breakfast bar or serving counter. When the windows and doors are shut, the kitchen and service yard are sealed off from the air-conditioned social spaces of this flat.

Home: 3-Room flat in Ang Mo Kio
Style: Industrial
Designer: Home Guide
The wall that enclosed the kitchen was removed without disturbing the beam, and replaced with a frameless glass door and panel. With this new design, the owners can entertain their guests while they cook with the glass door open. And even with the door shut, they won’t feel left out of the party as they can see what’s going on in the dining area.
A bright yellow-orange wall makes a fun style statement for the kitchen while differentiating it from the dining area. It juxtaposes the industrial-style raw concrete flooring and marine lights with exposed trunking.
