“Everybody wants to be a cat because a cat’s the only cat who knows where it’s at,” sings Scat Cat in the 1970 Walt Disney movie The Aristocats.
These cats are certainly living it up in the lap of feline luxury; their owners have thoughtfully catered to their peculiar habits (climbing and scratching) from built-in features to dedicated rooms.

Home: 3-room Built-To-Order (BTO) flat in Bendemeer for a couple and their cats
Designer: The Scientist
One of the bedrooms was given up to create a studio-style layout for entertaining, coffee-drinking, reading, working and resting. A kitty ‘staircase’ of short planks climb the wall up to a walkway suspended under the ceiling. The designer did some research on cat behaviour and ergonomics to design the feature which is complemented by the geometric wall murals.

Home: 5-room flat in Bukit Batok for a family with three children – and seven cats
Designer: Kuay Mei Yee and team from Distinct Identity
The social spaces were enlarged by removing part of the the storeroom and a kitchen wall to give the pets space to roam freely. Pet-friendly woodlook vinyl flooring makes for a resilient, waterproof surface that retains the charm and warmth of timber.
A climbing feature designed around the TV puts the feline antics on display.

The laundry room was designed not only as a space for grooming, but also for feeding the cats, says Kuay. “It is meant to be a cosy abode for the paw pals, complete with wooden ‘catwalks’.”

A cat tree in one corner of the living room allows the cats to stretch and watch the world outside. They also have a cosy corner inside the living room cabinet, where they can retreat to if they’re feeling less sociable. Inside the cabinet is a small ladder for even more climbing opportunities.

Many non-structural walls were removed to open up the flat. The bedroom closest to the living room was assigned to the cats, and its wall were replaced with glass to allow the homeowners to see their furballs while they cook or eat.

The kitty ‘gym’ in the cat room was designed with walkways at different levels. The scratch-resistant pads which cover the poles and perches are attached with hook-and-loop fasteners, making them removable for cleaning.
