5 Things to Consider Before You Mount a TV on the Wall
These tips will help you to mark the exact position of the wall-mounted TV, hide the wiring and ensure organised storage
As technology advances, new-age TVs are getting slimmer, and the wall-mounted TV has emerged as the most popular form of TV installation, in both compact and spacious homes. The best part about a wall-mounted TV is that it helps to save precious floor space and can be easily positioned at a level that ensures comfortable viewing. For the hassle-free installation of a wall-mounted TV, here is what you need to know.
2. Height of the wall-mounted TV
Factors like the size of the TV, the viewing distance and the eye level of the viewer determine the height at which we should wall-mount a TV.
Factors like the size of the TV, the viewing distance and the eye level of the viewer determine the height at which we should wall-mount a TV.
- Firstly, choose a TV screen size that is suitable for the size of your room. Note that the diagonal measurement of the screen determines the size the TV.
- The centre of the TV is usually mounted at a height of 106 centimetres from floor level to ensure comfortable viewing from the couch. This height can be adjusted according to the height of the eye level of the viewer, which depends on the height of the sofa seating or the bed.
- If the TV needs to be viewed from two separate areas or directions, as in this example, consider a pivoting wall-mount. For installing a TV in the corner of the room, go for a corner wall-mount.
- Make sure that the brick wall or the wood partition is strong enough to take the load of the wall-mounted TV. Do not mount the TV on a gypsum partition, as it might not be able to take the load of the TV.
- Some TVs come with a mount and screws which can be efficiently used to wall-mount the TV. Alternatively, the wall mount can be purchased separately, according to the mounting style of the TV, from brands that are approved by the TV manufacturer.

- Cover the exposed wires with paintable conduits. This is one of the most practical options, especially in a rented apartment where the tenant is not allowed to tamper with the walls.
- A brick wall can be chipped to accommodate the concealed wiring for the wall-mounted TV and finally be finished with plaster and paint. This is, of course, for homeowners.
- Design a wall cabinet, a built-in wall unit or wall panelling, in materials such as plywood or MDF, so that the TV wiring can be concealed within it.

- Create clever storage in the TV and media unit so that it not only integrates with the decor of the room but also ensures organised storage.
- The wall-mounted TV unit should have provision for storing the remotes, set-top box and CDs. Note that the set-top box emits heat, hence it is should be placed in an open shelf, or within a niche or closed cabinet that has provision for ventilation, so as to prevent the electronic components from overheating.
