Designers are constantly searching for that perfect accessory, accent or shot of colour to enliven their projects. Recently, I have found myself turning to an injection of coral to energise my room schemes. Coral has the warmth of red, the carefree sense of orange and the romance of pink.
Melon, salmon, flamingo, peach, apricot – I love them all. They bring both freshness and warmth at the same time. Very often, red is too harsh, pink too feminine, orange too playful, but coral is a perfect blend. It has become my goldilocks colour: not too hot, not too cold: it is just right. And what I love most about the hue is its versatility.

1. Coral and pastel
Mixing in coral with pastel tones brings a happy energy for a look that is still serene, but has an added depth and warmth.

Mint, soft yellows, baby blues or greens and yes, even pink – coral brings life to them all.
A few accessories may be all that is needed to warm up these rooms for a look that is still tranquil but with added life.
2. Coral and something bold
Coral works equally well with stronger colours. Mixed with turquoise, coral brings a fresh zing to this morning room.

In this otherwise neutral space, we have introduced warmth and a sense of playfulness through the subtle coral piping detail on the sofas, and a single strong bolt of colour on the armchair.
4. Coral and black
Combined with black, the feel is very different. There is a strong, confident and almost masculine feel to this room.

6. Coral and grey
Coral and grey is one of my favourite combinations. Paired with soft grey, the look is fresh and elegant. The coral balances the coolness of the grey tone.

7. Coral walls
Don’t make the mistake of assuming that coral should be restricted to merely an accent colour.

In this classic living room, the designer has used a serene pale salmon shade for the wall colour, which fills the space with a feeling of sunlight flooding in. Paired with white millwork and soft greys, the look is crisp and contemporary. The sofa in a darker coral shade emphasises the colour choice.
Coral is the colour of the first morning light; it resonates with the promise of all the wonderful possibilities of tomorrow. It will bring a delightful ray of sunshine wherever it is used.
