1. Lighting is an easy and obvious choice
Adding a dramatic pendant light or a chandelier to your ceiling is an easy and relatively inexpensive way to add drama to your ceiling. You can also create bespoke light fittings by working with local artisans. Lasvit is an artistic glass company from Prague that also make bespoke light fittings, and they have an office in Singapore.

2. Recessed lighting and drop-ceilings
If you’re doing a complete renovation of your apartment, you can choose to add some interesting recessed lighting combined with a drop ceiling if you have a high ceiling. Recessed lighting can be subtle or dramatic, and you can also combine it with a statement light fixture, or another one of the design ideas below.

If your ceiling height is not tall enough to accommodate recessed lighting or a drop-ceiling, you can look for light fittings that give you a similar feel. Placing a series of differently- sized LED light boxes in the middle of the room can add texture and depth.

3. Ceiling fans can be ‘art’
In Singapore we often close up our apartments and switch on the air-conditioning, but if you’re lucky enough to live on a high floor, you can open your windows and install ceiling fans. Fans can now be pieces of art designed to accentuate your decor, or even become a dramatic feature on your ceiling.

4. Colour
When it comes to your ceilings, you don’t always have to stick to white. I love the drama of this orange version – you can read all about how to add orange to your home in the 2018 home colour trends.

If you find strong colour too much to face constantly, use it in a smaller room like the powder room or kitchen.
5. Wallpaper isn’t just for your walls
Wallpapering the ceiling isn’t so insane when you consider – isn’t the ceiling like a wall, only at a different angle?

6. Likewise, timber aren’t just for floors
Lots of us are partial to a bit of timber flooring, so how about ‘sandwiching’ your room with a wood panelled ceiling as well?

7. Cornices don’t have to be boring
Cornices are the ornamental moulding, usually made of canvas-backed plaster, that run around the top of a room, just below the ceiling. During the Victorian period (1837-1901), cornices became very ornate and there are lots of reproduction versions available to add a touch of elegance to your ceilings. If you prefer a more streamlined, linear look, check out cornices from the Art Deco period (1925- late 1930s).

You can make the most of a traditional cornice by extending it to the ceiling and rounding out the wall-to-ceiling joint with plaster.
8. Go all out with a pressed tin ceiling
If you’re looking for a vintage or Wabi Sabi interior style, then you can think about adding a pressed tin ceiling to one of your rooms. There are a lot of different patterns available, from Victorian to Art Deco, and they are a fabulous way to add a mirror-like feel to a room with a low head-height. Go online to search for old ones that are perfect for a recycled look.
