Coming into the silly season, there is an abundance of clever and beautiful DIY home projects for Christmas creatives to delve into, and it seems a shame that these handcrafted treasures have to be hidden away after the festivities are over. For the elves that love to decorate (and have to entertain the kids at the same time) we’ve put together a list of DIY Christmas star decorations that don’t have to go away on January 6, and instead can be stylishly centrestage all year round.
1. Fairy light star
For a simple, Scandi-style Christmas decoration, bind together twigs or branches in a star shape with twine or pale string. Wrap fairy lights around the branches for extra sparkle and prop it up on your mantel for a pleasing decoration that will add twinkly style for the festive season and beyond. Just remember to use battery powered cords to avoid unsightly wires.

2. Wall-hanging
Finer twigs are perfect for creating delicate and lovely wall-hangings to add interest to a forgotten corner. Use twine or a glue gun to hold the twigs in place. Finally, choose string to hang it. From rustic twine to festive golden string, choose an option to suit your style and it’ll complete the look.

3. Beaded star
Make your Christmas extra sweet by creating your own beaded star wreath by following this easy tutorial. The project is shown here in white, but you can go as bright and bold as you like.
You’ll need wire, beads and string to hang the star. What’s great about this DIY is that you can vary the size so it can work for anything from Christmas tree decorations to a Christmas wreath. After Christmas, hang it up above the bed for a sweet focal point.

4. Illuminated metal wreath
While this DIY Christmas project is a little more technical, this truly sparkling LED star is a modern take on the traditional Christmas wreath that’s sure to make a statement on your front door, and add sparkle to a scheme for the days to follow.

5. Clay cookie-cutter ornaments
These sweet Christmas decorations are super easy and super stylish, perfect for the tree, and not to mention a timeless gift tag idea. Roll out white, air-dry clay (available at most craft stores) and cut into shapes. Finally, use a straw to poke a round hole in the top for the string. After Christmas? Hang on doorknobs, bedposts or on mantels for hints of Scandi joy.

6. Starfish garland
If a beachy Christmas is more your style, a craft-starfish garland is a clever way to get the look. You can find craft starfish at most good craft stores or online. Either drill a small hole in one of the arms to pull string through, or tie the string around the top of the arm. This is another timeless DIY that will sit as happily in a beachcomber scheme as it will a festive one.
Tip: If you’re renting and can’t put holes in walls, hang the garland across your bedhead or a curtain rod.

For a garland the kids can help create, simply cut out cardboard in the shape of stars and tape string to the back. Follow with a coat of gold paint, and you have a super easy, and super sweet star garland that is perfectly transitioned to a nursery after Christmas is over.
These string-art stars can also be used as striking gift adornments and don’t have to be chucked once the last present is unwrapped – you can vary the colour and string texture to match just about any holiday event.
