Bought my first Xmas gift bag in the 1980s and still using some of them. At the beginning I’d nervously advise the bag wasn’t included as part of the present but as it caught on, we know it’ll even out overall. It’s become family tradition to see who had that particular box or box in years past. Gift bags and boxes also have the added advantage of making wrapping a breeze. We have some fancy alligator clips to keep the recipients from peeking. I must add though, we didn’t put gifts under the tree when the kids were little. Too much temptation :) We’ve also had our, mainly glass, decorations, forever. They are kept in a large box and have survived cats, kids and dozens of moves, across four states (The trick is carpet or mat under the tree and barrier when chicks and kits are small)

Every year I seem to panic at the last minute and throw packets of plastic cutlery and cups into the shopping (just in case). This year I'm going to buy some inexpensive cutlery sets and tumblers that will be recognized as re-usable and will go into the dishwasher instead of the bin. On the funnier side - someone in our family re-gifted a box of cheap shortbread cookies to someone else who then gifted it to the next person (on their birthday). This became a tradition at several family events with the same cookies resurfacing a number of times until someone actually opened the box and passed them around.

A great article with lots of ideas and something we can aspire to. We might do all these things but a great guide to get us on track. We forget how much plastic we use at Christmas and what items actually contain this obnoxious material.
