Are Coloured, Painted Feature Walls Making a Comeback?
Painting is the cheapest, quickest way to change the look of a space, and it's gaining new fans
Design superstar Karim Rashid, whom I interviewed years ago when he was in Singapore for Veuve Clicquot, said that painting is his preferred way of bringing his favourite colour (pink) to a room. It’s economical and easy, and it will last for several years – or you can freshen up with a new colour every year.
Browsing the newest project photos uploaded to Houzz, painted feature walls jumped off my screen. Not only are there a good number, but they are – as their designers intended – eye-catching and memorable.
As Singapore homes are looking less generic-industrial in style, faux brick, wood-look laminates and concrete screed walls are giving way to wallpaper and coloured finishes. Interestingly, paint allows homeowners to express their personal style, whether it’s a preference for the sweet pastels of Scandi-inspired interiors, or bolder contemporary statements.

And yes, paint may be the cheaper alternative to wallpaper and other finishes, but these homes show that paint doesn’t have to look cheap at all! Paired with marble tiled walls, as above, or brass mirrors, left, painted walls look just as lush and luxurious.
Feeling adventurous? Choose contrasting colours for adjacent walls, as above.
Need to create visual cosiness in a large void? Use a dark, comforting hue to anchor the space, left.
If you need to create the illusion of a brighter, bigger space, there’s also a paint colour solution for that.
