The Furniture Design Award (FDA) is an annual furniture design competition organised by the Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC). The Award aims to uncover budding design talents both locally and internationally and be a reputable showcase for the unique creations of the world’s best creative minds. Increasingly, FDA has become a platform for exchange and networking amongst furniture manufacturers and designers internationally.
Participants from all backgrounds, including design students and professionals, are invited to submit their original works. The FDA 2017 will, as in the previous year, take on a ‘free style’ approach where designers are encouraged to exercise their creativity without restrictions, and demonstrate originality in their works. The 2017 edition will keep its single category format, by presenting one Grand Award that comes with prize money of S$20,000. In addition, the winner will also get to present his/her designs in a 12-square-metre exhibition booth at the following International Furniture Fair Singapore/ASEAN Furniture Show in 2018.
The panel of six jurors from last year will be judging FDA2017 and they include chief juror Patrick Chia from Singapore, Professor Byungkil Kang from South Korea; Colin Seah from Singapore; Jurgen Bey from the Netherlands; Shin Azumi from Japan; and Tony K. M. Chang, from Taiwan.

Ito Kish’s Binhi consists of rattan furniture moulded into curvaceous organic shapes recalling the shape of seeds. The collection of outdoor furniture invites the user to “rest under the shade of the tree”.
Purda, designed by Singapore-based multi-disciplinary creative Parth Sharma, re-interprets traditional cabinet construction by replacing cabinet doors with a pleated fabric which can be slid open or closed like a veil. The pleated fabric adds fragility and airiness, lending the room a quality of openness.
Architect and designer Charles O. Job’s entry imagines a simple piece of furniture with an easy constructive principle that even a child can understand. Prêt-à-porter’s modular furniture concept facilitates self-assembly by allowing the user to tie pieces together.
Bangkok Industrial designer Ath, a member of Thinkk Studio, designed Pagodi, a dressing unit that fits perfectly into everyday life. Combining the traditional craftsmanship of wood turning with a modern toy-like method of stacking, the efficient unit takes full advantage of vertical space.
Hong Kong designer Grace Cheung’s Stool for Us is a piece of furniture about sharing and connection between two individuals.
