Bathrooms come in all shapes, sizes and conditions, regardless of whether you are renting, own your own place or are planning your next renovation. It’s the multi-functioning space where we prepare for the day ahead, go to seek some solitude and wash off the day, and is one of the most used spots in the home – so make sure you style it with purpose. Keeping it simple is key as function should be paramount, but consider one or two of these styling ideas and you’ll also make it a space you’ll want to escape to.
1. Choose an interior style
Whether you’re renting, working with existing conditions, or planning a brand-new bathroom renovation, know the interior style you are working with. In my opinion, a home should have a common thread and the interior style should flow throughout the home, including the bathroom.
For instance, in this period-style bathroom, a few quirky and interesting touches have been added to give the space real personality, yet keep within the interior style and architecture of the existing space. Choose accessories in line with the interior style to pretty up the vanity or wall space. As the bathroom needs to remain functional, items that you use daily can make up the bulk of the accessories component, such as hand soaps, a scented candle and glass containers housing make-up or face wipes. However, don’t shy away from displaying an ornament if it ties in with the overall scheme and won’t clutter the space.

2. Keep it simple
Less is certainly more in the bathroom as it needs to be functional. Collections and knick-knacks should be left to the living area, for instance, while the bathroom is styled with mostly functional items. If you can’t use it, or it serves no purpose, remove it from the bathroom!

3. Add brightly-coloured towels
Do yourself a favour and ditch those scratchy old towels and buy some new soft and fluffy numbers. Choose towels in a strong accent shade or a bold print, such as fresh spring florals, to liven up your scheme for next to no effort at all. The best news is they’re functional too.

4. Add flowers and plants
I love indoor plants and the bathroom can be the perfect environment for growing them. Many plants such as orchids and maidenhair ferns thrive in humidity and a warm and wet climate. Filtered light, which is common in the bathroom, and moisture from the shower will help recreate the natural environment in which these plants flourish.

5. Choose a luxurious range of hand soap
Choose bathroom products with beautiful packaging and scents that help to lift your bathroom. Roll up face towels and place these beside the products or style everything on a tray to maintain some order. Remember to play with heights and textures and group in odd numbers – groups of three always communicate well.

6. Treat your feet
Rugs can make a huge difference to a bathroom and require next to no effort. Not only can they add texture, colour or pattern, but they’re also a pleasure for your feet. Round rugs are a great option when fitting a small, tight or difficult space. Just make sure you choose a material that you can step on with wet feet and throw in the washing machine for ease.
BONUS TIP: For an extra splash of pampering perfection, invest in a comfy pouffe to perch on post soak. This knit number adds texture to the nature-inspired scheme and can be tucked into the corner when not in use.

8. Add a feature stool
Space permitting, consider placing a feature stool beside your tub, so you have another handy spot to stow your hot cuppa, favourite bath scrub or scented candle while soaking.

7. Add ambient light
Put out your favourite scented candle and actually light them. A soft, gentle ambient glow is paramount to creating a relaxing place to escape to. Another easy way to create a warm and welcoming glow, with hardly any effort, is to bring in a pretty table lamp to sit on your vanity or side table.

9. Add a shower curtain
Shower curtains can make or break a bathroom, but one thing’s for sure: they are easy to add and can liven up your space in next to no time.
Shower curtains come in a range of materials and you need to keep this in mind when shopping around. Natural fibre shower curtains such as linen and cotton come in a variety of weights and patterns but need a vinyl liner to prevent the build up of moisture and mould. Synthetic materials such as vinyl are relatively easy to wash and do not need a liner. These can, however, have a bit of a plastic look to them, so a polyester fabric is often better as it is naturally waterproof yet has a similar aesthetic to a natural fibre curtain.

10. Add easy storage
A ladder to hang towels on is a great option that doesn’t take up much floor space, adds interest to the vertical space without leaving a mark, is easy to add and, you guessed it, is functional.

Storage baskets are great because they can be tucked away in corners, nooks and They can be used to store towels (try rolling them), hairdryers, straighteners and bath toys for the kids. Plastic tubs are a better solution for bath toys or things that will get wet, whereas natural woven baskets are great for storing towels and toilet paper.
11. Keep it clean
As they say, cleanliness is next to godliness, so keep this space in tip-top shape. Where possible, close clutter behind cupboard doors. Keep the vanity and benchtops clear and clean so you have room to move when you’re getting ready for your day. Look at your main offenders, the things that always are left around, and either find a permanent place for them or bin them. Hairdryers, empty bottles, make-up, lotions and potions are my main culprits…

I do like most of the photo's but I cannot come at the first bathroom picture. It certainly doesn't make me feel calm and relaxed but wanting instead to put plaster up!!.....ha-ha
My mother told me when she and dad first started building their dream home over 60+ yeasrs ago, starting with one room and no more money for plaster, wallpapered the walls with magazines until the finances allowed for plaster.
I hope when my bathroom is complete that it is as elegant as most of the other photo's on this thread.
picture 3 is so wrong. Very bad feng shui to have a budha on the floor in front of the loo. disrespectful
