Big Ideas for Small Home Offices from 3 Apartments
Working from home doesn't mean setting up at the dining table or your bedside vanity anymore

With more and more Singaporeans telecommuting, freelancing or setting up small businesses, home offices have become a norm (the HDB even has guidelines on setting up a formal home office). But not many home offices blend in well with the rest of the home’s interiors, looking more utilitarian and, well, office-y. Check out these three apartment home offices that actually do harmonise with the rest of the home, and still maintain their functional features.
1. Open office
Home: 4-room Flat (BTO) in Choa Chu Kang
Designer: Studio FortyFour
A third bedroom – the one closest to the living and dining areas – was opened up to incorporate the home office with the two social spaces.

The designers fitted the workspace seamlessly within the living space, designing shelves for the homeowners’ quirky collection of books, video games and toy collectibles. A bay window seat makes for a cosy reading nook at one end of the desk and shelves.
As the owners, a married couple, have the whole flat to themselves, they wanted the openness of an office-living-dining space. A work space that looks out to the living area allows them to enjoy each other’s company while either is working or chilling out.

2. Room with a view
Home: Condominium – loft unit
Designer: The Interior Place
Part of the wall of the spare room was replaced with glass panels, visually opening up the home office to the living area. Being completely enclosed floor-to-ceiling, the home office offers quiet and privacy while allowing its sneakerhead owner to look at his sneaker collection displayed in the living area.
The home office has a carpeted platform that’s roomy enough to nap on, but also ideal as a reading nook.

3. Tatami-style sunken seating with storage
Home: Flat (DBSS) in Ang Mo Kio
Designer: DISTINCTidENTITY
Raising the entire floor of the home office to the seat height of a chair – approximately two steps up – created hidden storage plus a variety of seating options to work with. There are floor seats, cushions and a bay window to stretch out one’s legs on. A legless chair takes the place of a conventional seat for the actual work space, but a mobile table allows the homeowners to take their work to any corner of the room.
