Bright Idea: The Sputnik Chandelier Lights up a Variety of Spaces
The Sputnik chandelier is the most enduring symbol from the Atomic Age of Design
In 1957 the Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite into orbit. It was a 58-centimetre polished metal sphere, about the size of a beach ball, with four external antennae. Sputnik is the Russian word for satellite and this first ‘Sputnik’ was clearly visible from earth by anyone with a pair of binoculars.
The launch, of this first object into space inspired the creation of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in the United States, and across the globe, an infatuation with all things space-related. In fashion and design, this period became known as the “Atomic Age of Design”. Many of these designs have long been forgotten but the Sputnik chandelier has stood the test of time and has become a true design classic. The Sputnik chandelier is probably the most enduring design of the Atomic Age.

Interestingly, the shape of the Sputnik chandelier was actually around even before the Russian satellite ever orbited the globe. An Italian lighting designer Gino Sarfatti developed similar lights in the mid-1930s. Many of Sarfatti’s ceiling light designs bear a distinct resemblance to the classic look of Sputnik chandeliers.
Since then, the Sputnik chandelier has been reinterpreted and reinvented over the decades, bringing a unique playfulness to a multitude of design styles from classic to contemporary, modern to glamorous.
The quirky, unique form of the Sputnik chandelier gives it a significant presence, enabling it to hold its own in the boldest of settings.
Yet, it can fit equally comfortably into a traditional environment.
And that is precisely why I adore the Sputnik chandelier – the wonderful thing about a Sputnik is that it goes with everything!
And it as equally at home in the bedroom. Notice how the dark ceiling acts as a delightful backdrop, giving the Sputnik an even greater presence.
Certainly a statement piece, the Sputnik is a perfect choice for a kitchen. With few textures and soft materials, kitchens especially large modern ones, can be at risk of feeling cold. I love how the Sputnik adds personality and a textural element that invigorates this contemporary kitchen,
But the Sputnik fits just as well in this classic kitchen too.
The Sputnik is always a practical (as well as stylish) choice for a study, as the multiple light sources provide ample light.
And yet, it can look elegant and refined in a living room too.
Or have a double dose of fun over a rectangular dining table.
Perfect outside…
…or in the most confined space.
The Sputnik is one of the most versatile stylish interior elements.
And even if ceiling height is a problem, half a light can still give a major impact!
So next time you are searching for that perfect piece to pull a room together, consider the Sputnik, it might be just the ticket.
