Choosing and Hanging Your Dining Room Light
Pendant or chandelier, your dining light is the one standout light the home should have
There’s nothing like a great chandelier or pendant light hanging over a dining room table to really bring the room to life. But there are a couple things to keep in mind when hanging it.
Size Matters
If your dining room is smaller than 3 x 3 metres, look for lights that measure 43 to 50 centimetres in diameter.
If your room is around 3.6 x 3.6 metres, a 66 to 69-centimetre light would be appropriate.
If your room is in the 4.2 to 5.2-metre range, look for light that measures 61 to 91 centimetres in diameter.

I love that this fixture looks like a flower!
Even though there’s no table in this photo – I couldn’t help but include it. Talk about an amazing chandelier!
Dripping with crystals, this little chandelier makes such a sweet statement in this eclectic dining space.

A single white pendant light over the table gives the room a lighter feel than a chunky chandelier would.
Shiny, metallic pendants give this space a wonderfully industrial feel.
I love how the dark walls make the white fireplace, white ceiling, white light fixture and white frames really pop.
This is a great example of how a fantastic fixture can really draw the eye up.

The light you hang over your table needs to be hung high enough to not block the view, but low enough to effectively light up your tabletop. Typically, dining room fixtures are hung 76 to 91 centimetres above the surface of the table.
The Bright Stuff
The total wattage of all of your light fixtures bulbs should be between 200 and 400 watts. That will provide sufficient light, and the perfect amount of ambience too!
