Aquariums are fascinating, mesmerising and relaxing to watch; so much so that they can calm you down after a long, hard day. With so many different varieties of fish and plants to choose from and combine, they provide both contrast and splashes of colour in a scheme and create a spectacular focal point in any room in the house.
Choose all white
This small aquarium fits neatly into a partition in an all-white open-plan scheme, bringing in a splash of colour and taking centre stage. It works so well here because the view through the tank is not obstructed, adding to the relaxed feel of the space.

Create a kitchen sink drama
This brightly coloured scheme provides a perfect opportunity to go wild with a colourful aquarium, complete with bright-blue cichlid fish. The space where this self-feeding fish tank sits was originally a window., which means it is accessible from the outside for cleaning.

Combine with other features
Who wouldn’t want to relax reading a good book in such serene surroundings? This streamlined cabinetry is complemented by a beautifully proportioned aquarium, which has concealed access for cleaning and feeding, and space in the cupboard below for the filter and other equipment.

This installation would also work in the space under a staircase, or as an unexpected feature on a landing wall, especially if you are able to see through it to another part of the house.

Enhance your viewing pleasure
You might expect to position a TV over a mantelpiece but, in this case, it’s an aquarium over a TV that creates the focal point of this living room. It’s a very clever and unexpected idea – just be kind to the fish, and don’t turn the volume up too high.

Create an entrance
This aquarium in the entrance hall of a period house in London has a lovely welcoming effect. The designer has ensured that nothing obstructs the view through the glass, to emphasise the delicately swaying plants and small swirling fish, and also provide glimpses of the rooms beyond.

Aquariums are a great way to bring in a lively splash of colour and warmth into an all-white interior. And here, too, the vibrant link to the stained glass in the front door works well.

Supersize it
If you have the space, make your aquarium as large as you can to create an unusual and striking feature wall, as seen here in this London apartment .

Make it a conversation piece
The kitchen and dining area is the heart of any home, where families and friends like to meet to eat and talk. An aquarium as a colourful backdrop, as seen here, makes it even more special.
Aquarium Architecture
Double up
This fabulous kitchen-diner demonstrates what happens when one of you is after a large contemporary dream kitchen, and the other wants a large contemporary dream aquarium. One of the sleek cupboards underneath is used for fish paraphernalia and equipment, with the others for kitchen kit – so everyone is happy.
Aquarium Architecture
Consider curves
The aquarium on this striking landing is an absolute joy to behold. Not only does its sweeping shape fit in with the ambitious design of the staircase, it also provides a fantastic contrast to the smart grey interior.
Aquarium Architecture
Embrace the ocean
This stunning illuminated seawater aquarium, with plants and fish in almost other-wordly colours, creates a very bold statement in this contemporary space.

Ensure your staircase is spectacular
Space under the stairs is often under-used: some people have storage or access to their electricity meter, while some prefer to liven it up with an amazing corner aquarium just like this one.

Contrast colours and texture
A cool-blue tank sits perfectly between natural stone pillars in this kitchen scheme, creating an amazing contrast and focal point. As the stonework acts as a room divider, the tank can also be viewed from the other side.
Mitchell Berry Architects
Gain focus in a games room
Aquariums are very calming and can aid concentration, and so are perfect for a games room. Even the colours of the fish seem to have been chosen to match the colours of the balls on the pool table. You may want to consider toughened glass!
