For this family of three, a classic, cosy style that is conducive to family time and can grow with them was the way to go when they had their five-room flat renovated. Eric Chua of Sync Interior took their brief requesting “a family-friendly home, [with] ease of maintenance and spaces that every family member could enjoy and feel at ease in” and translated it into this low-key yet elegant apartment.

Spaces were reconfigured in the five-room flat so that there are now three bedrooms, a generously-sized living and dining area with an open-concept dry kitchen and a separate wet kitchen.
A bar-height counter in the centre of the living area provides space to eat, work/study, or simply chill out with the rest of the family as they lounge in front of the TV.
There is a separate dining space with easy access to the dry kitchen, which was designed primarily for storage, for proper sit-down meals too.

The common areas – living, dining and dry kitchen – were designed with clean, minimalist lines. Chua customised the TV console cabinet and counter for a cohesive look. Furniture and furnishings were bought off-the-shelf by the owners, with the advice of the designer.
Chua used a black-grey-white colour scheme with wood details “because these colours evoke a cosy and warm, inviting feel, and enable the space to bring out an elegant and luxurious atmosphere”.

The master bedroom was designed with a purpose-built work space. Perpendicular to the work space is a thoughtfully designed feature wall incorporating storage, TV and part of the wardrobe.
It’s designed with the same neutral, cosy colour palette as the common areas.

The common room was designed as a guest bedroom, with a custom-built cabinet integrated with the bed. Chua designed it in a restful white and grey colour scheme.
The daughter’s room, although minimally furnished in the same elegant hand as the other rooms, was painted in colours that she appreciates.
