Houzz Tour: A Flat Inspired by Scandi-Chic Kinfolk Magazine
The homeowners' personal interpretation of the laid-back Scandinavian style includes hints of industrial elements
Mesmerised by the beautiful homes featured in culture and lifestyle magazine, Kinfolk, the homeowners turned to the magazine for inspiration for their new home. While the magazine features design trends from all over the world, the couple’s design aesthetic leans towards the rustic, Nordic look that is timeless and elegant.
As such, they turned to Kate Deng of Mr Shopper Studio who helped turn their ideas into reality.

“The homeowners like the Scandinavian and bohemian style, but with an industrial twist,” says Deng.
The light wood flooring and neutral tones help set the foundation for the overall look. The mix of textures in the living room furniture give off a cosy, laid-back feel, channelling the Scandi-chic vibe.

This room is currently used as a study and in the future, for their dog.
With the wall partially hacked, the room is much brighter, and the sense of openness makes it feel more spacious.
Wanting to use the homeowners’ favourite colour, turquoise, in the room, Deng proposed colouring only the bottom half of the walls for a unique look.
“We felt that it would seem too overwhelming if the whole room was painted turquoise,” explains Deng.

To maximise storage space, Deng built floor-to-ceiling cabinets that stretch from the entrance to the dining area. They conceal the household shelter and’ shoes, giving the home a neat and uncluttered look.
Keeping to the rustic Nordic decor aesthetic, the kitchen is fitted with Shaker-style cabinets and white subway tiles. The deep shade of blue of the cabinets gives the kitchen a vintage flair that’s classic but chic.
The industrial style is evident in the master bedroom. The wooden ‘coffer’-style headboard, suspended bedside lamps, and aluminium blinds help pull the look together.
Swapping out the wooden door for these swing-slide louvred doors gave this bathroom the rustic look the homeowners were gunning for.
“The aluminium framework on this door gives a vintage look while enhancing its functionality as it is space-saving and waterproof,” says Deng.
Also, wanting to incorporate the industrial-style elements, the homeowners chose to go with black bathroom fittings instead of the conventional chrome ones.
