Houzz Tour: A Light and Airy Home Redesigned for New Owners
A 20-year-old house is refreshed for its new inhabitants
A 20-year-old home in Bedok in its original condition proved to have the perfect ‘bones’ for a young family looking for more room for their three kids. It had been vacated for about a year when the owner viewed the place. However, despite the dated decor, the client was impressed by the size of the house, the layout and garden.
The client reached out to interior stylist Priscilla Tan from Styledbypt who is known for her mix of stylish minimalism with quirky-cute touches.

Passing through porch, you enter the living room with a double volume ceiling with a large window on the second floor that lets ample light into the living area.
The client wanted to create a home that was homely, easy to maintain and have lots of areas to display her plants and beautiful objects.
The design theme is a mix of Scandinavian and boho chic for a smart but lived-in look.
For the living and dining areas, the designer and client decided on a clean and timeless look that can be updated with soft furnishings rather than be pinned down by a look dictated by built-ins and feature walls.
The open kitchen is at the rear of the living room. It is sunny and airy as it leads to a small patio and garden.
The patterned cement tiles for the kitchen floor were one of the first things the client decided on and laid the ground for the central colour theme.
The client decided not to replace the existing grey and brown granite flooring so the designer used white carpentry to lighten the space.
Although the client didn’t want to add a great deal of cabinetry, the designer built two consoles with the client’s lifestyle in mind. One has a sliding door that allows the television to be concealed when needed. The other, which is in the dining area, hides compartments for the children’s toys behind decorative shelves.

A family room on the ground floor was decorated with wallpaper and Priscilla put in brass shelves to add a touch of glamour while giving the client the display space she requested for.
There are two guest bedrooms on the ground floor, and three family bedrooms on the second floor.
All the bedrooms have been styled to match each occupant’s likes.
The girl’s bedroom has a series of sticker decals of stars and unique three-tone painted walls that match the curtains and make the space feel larger. The designer went through several tries to finding the perfect colour match and correct alignment.
The beds in all the children’s rooms are very low and as the client was concerned about them falling from higher beds.

The guest bathroom mixes crisp white tiles with a mint green painted vanity. Gold hardware top off the modern and chic space.
The designer wanted to create different zones for each of the three bathrooms based on who would be using them. The second floor bathroom is all white, mint and gold and has a lot of natural light, making it spacious and elegant.
The master bathroom has the look and feel of a luxury hotel with patterned tiles and a double vanity.

The children’s bathroom on the third floor is functional but playful with its pastel tones.
The furniture and fixtures were sourced from a variety of local places including Affordable Style Files, World Farm for plants, Castlery, Finn Avenue Furniture, and Ikea. Other items were sourced from Taobao.
