Houzz Tour: A Modern-chic Flat That is Ready For Entertaining
The creative use of space was the key to making this HDB Maisonette an entertaining-friendly home
The homeowners wanted a modern home that’s airy and welcoming as they love to invite their family and friends to their apartment, according to the design team at Distinct Identity.
Wanting to keep the walls white, the homeowners opted for vinyl flooring that resembles the look of wood to add warmth to the house. With that as a base, the designers collaborated with the homeowners to pick out furniture and accessories that would complement the modern decor they were aiming for.

As such, an open-concept kitchen was proposed as it overlooks the dining room. This ensures the the homeowners can easily interact with their guests while they are cooking in the kitchen.
The designers also carved out another entertaining area which the homeowners term ‘the tea room.’
Wanting to re-creating the look of black-and-white colonial bungalows, the homeowners chose wooden louvres or shutters instead of curtains for the windows.
The louvres offer privacy and shade when closed, and let in natural light when kept open.
To ‘hide’ the awkward column by the entryway, it was clad with mirrors, giving the illusion of a larger space, too.

One of the highlights of this home is the skylight canopy above the dining room which makes the room look and feel larger.
The windows in the dining room were also given the same window treatment as the tea room. Here, the homeowners chose a slim table and threw in a mix of chairs and a bench for a more flexible seating arrangement that is necessary when entertaining.
Storage was not neglected in this flat. The design team proposed turning the area under the staircase into a storeroom. The door to the storeroom is well-hidden as it is clad in the same rich walnut laminate as the rest of the staircase – turning it into a simple feature wall.
Simply furnished, the master bedroom exudes tranquility and comfort with the use of the same soothing walnut laminate in the wardrobe, in contrast to the white walls and crisp white bedding.
To accommodate the double sink vanity, the wash area was taken out of the wet area, resulting in a more spacious en suite bathroom.
The mosaic tiles in the shower area perk up this all-white bathroom, giving it a modern-chic look.
A sense of luxury is also evident in the other bathroom, where it is fitted with a bathtub, and clad with tiles that resemble marble.
