Living in space-starved Singapore, I am particularly interested to see how homeowners tackle storage solutions for small homes and how they maximise their floor space. I believe that with all things, less is more!

After living in this apartment for more than 20 years, the Ewes wanted a new look for their home. They engaged interior designer Lynn Phang of Chapter B to give their home a makeover, reconfiguring various parts of the home to better reflect their current lifestyle and storage needs.

The furniture in the living room is a mix of old and new – curated by Phang and the homeowners.
Phang reveals that some of the old furniture like the bamboo sofa, was reupholstered, and some of the homeowner’s favourite art pieces were reframed for a fresh new presentation.
“We gathered their collectibles which were previously scattered all around the house and housed them in open shelves in the living room and the family entertainment room,” shares Phang.

An oriental-style dining table with mother-of-pearl inlay takes centre stage in this part of the home. Given as a gift to the family, this dining set holds special meaning to the homeowners.
“As it is too big for a family of four, it is only used during gatherings,” says Phang.

“The homeowner uses this area for preparing breakfast and light meals on weekends. He loves that he can easily interact with his family while cooking,” shares Phang.
Fitted with a sink and induction stove, this bar counter serves as the dry kitchen and a second dining area for family meals.
The main kitchen of the home is through the glass doors.

Here, the clean lines, cool colour palette, and eye-catching detail on the floor tiles bring a modern edge to the kitchen.
On the other side of the kitchen sits an oriental-style cabinet from furniture retailer Just Anthony. The intricate lattice design on the front is a nod to the oriental style the homeowners love.
As adding more storage to the home was a priority, Phang built an integrated wardrobe and shelving system to help maximise space in this bedroom.
This long walkway leads to the master bedroom suite that also encompasses the family entertainment room and home office.
Designed to resemble an art gallery, Phang made use of the wall space to showcase art from the homeowners’ collection.

Light from the display shelves functions as ambient lighting for the entertainment room, resulting in a theatre-like feel.
A soothing shade of lilac was chosen for the master bedroom. Fusing both modern classical and oriental styles together, Phang added wainscoting on the walls in juxtaposition to the Asian-inspired furniture.
The home office that sits within the master bedroom suite is separated from the sleeping area by a glass sliding door for more privacy.
“For the bathrooms, we wanted to play around with various tile patterns and components,” says Phang.
The geometric tiles, laid on top of the cement screed wall, adds a unique rustic and retro touch.

Some of the homeowners’ art are also hung in the bathrooms.
A modern and chic approach was taken for the design of the common bathroom with cement screed walls, white subway tiles, and hexagon floor tiles.
