The warm and cosy feel characteristic of the Scandinavian style is apparent in this four-room Build-To-Order (BTO) flat, but designers Wilson Teng and Vandra Png of Studio FortyFour made sure it is far from the typical. “A home that features pops of blue was the owners’ request,” says Png. Finding creative ways of introducing the couple’s favourite colour in a sea of whites and pale wood shades paved the way for a personalised and inviting home.

It was important to keep the living spaces open and spacious to host gatherings. To maintain a laid-back, low-maintenance look, they chose these cushy Avatar Lounger and Butterfly Sofa bean bag from Ambient Lounge as seating.
“The unit came with flooring by the HDB that the owners opted for, but we decided to overlay it with vinyl flooring in the living area and three bedrooms,” says Png. Having wood finishes in the same shade further enhances the openness and the minimalist approach of the design.
By the entrance is a half-mirror, half-wood door, which not only allows for last minute outfit checks before heading out the door, but also cleverly hides the DB (electrical distribution board) box.
Many of the photographs around the home were taken by the wife. They create a photographic showcase of her faves and add personality to the living spaces.

The blue geometric wall accent adds a dynamic touch to the dining area. The designers chose mid-century modern-inspired pieces to highlight the minimalist design.
The design team decided to keep the kitchen enclosed to prevent cooking smells from wafting through the living spaces. The glass door gives a peek into the space and allows light to come through. It features the quirky phrases: mai kei ki (which means “most welcome") and jiak jiak jiak ("eat eat eat"). “These Teochew sayings portray the couple’s background, great hospitality and love for food,” say Png.
The owners’ preference for blue is well considered in the kitchen, too. The light blue and natural wood combination for the custom cabinetry renders a casual, modern look to the space.
The designers used the full-height wardrobe to demarcate the sleeping and dressing areas in the master bedroom. The space-saving ladder desk brings more functionality to the compact area.
The pared-down styling and neutral palette of the bedroom evokes a relaxing ambience. With only the soft blue wall lights and the Harry Potter-inspired cushions to perk up the space, the owners are sure to enjoy peacefully sweet slumber.
