Having previously lived in Norway for a few years, the owners yearned to bring a piece of Scandinavia into their new home by putting together and highlighting elements that Scandinavian design is known for. They turned to Jeff Gan of Space Atelier to help transform their 5-room HDB flat into a spacious, bright and clean-lined dwelling. A monochromatic palette with plenty of wood tones brings about a cool, soothing setting, while minimalist lines and functional furnishings enhance the uncluttered look.

Playing with textures against a crisp white interior is a signature Nordic decorating technique. In the living room, the two long walls – one in brick finish and the other containing cabinetry in laminate with a raw cement and distressed wood design – keep the area from looking too sterile. The L-shaped couch is also anchored by a textured rug, creating a cushiony contrast against the polished tile flooring.

One of the challenges Gan tackled was the design and execution of the suspended table situated behind the sofa. “The owners want their beloved golden retriever to roam around freely, without knocking into the table. They also want to be able to clean the area without having to shuffle the table around,” he says. He decided to use laminate for the table surface and mild steel in powder-coated finish for the brace, so the desk won’t look too heavy and still have ample support.
The wall between the kitchen and the living-dining area was hacked down to half-height and replaced with a metal-framed glass divider to provide a sense of spaciousness to the communal areas. “At the same time, the owner won’t feel claustrophobic in the kitchen,” says Gan. The glass swing door ensures visual connection and enhances flow of light between the areas.

In the galley kitchen, Gan chose black subway tiles for the backsplash as a contrast to the all-wood cabinetry and white solid surface countertop. Concealed lights underneath the cabinet add ambience.

“We adopted a minimalist concept for the master bedroom by creating a platform for the bed,” says Gan. This way, the entire space underneath the platform is dedicated for storage. The long headboard is finished in the same laminate for continuity, while mirrors are installed above the headboard to visually enlarge the room. With plenty of daylight streaming in, the bedroom becomes a cosy and airy retreat.
